Does OGX Shampoo have Silicone? Yes, all OGX shampoos have silicones in them, but most of them do not contain the types of silicones that build up on your hair.
This post looks at what kind of silicones you’ll find in OGX shampoos, and which shampoos you should avoid if you’re following the curly girl method.
Does OGX Shampoo have Silicone in it?
Before we look at the silicones in OGX shampoos, it’s important to understand that not all silicones are necessarily bad for your hair. Silicones can be divided into two categories: water soluble and non-water soluble.
Non Water Soluble Silicones
Silicones which are not water soluble can end up building up on the hair and making it dull and brittle.
Non-soluble silicones do have their advantages however. They tend to be good at protecting the hair from heat styling, and can help to seal the hair shaft if you have high porosity hair.
Some examples of non water soluble silicones include:
- Pheryl Trimethicone
- Ceteraryl Methicone
- Stearyl Dimethicone
One quick way to spot silicones is to look for any ingredients ending with “cone”. Non water soluble silicones are not recommended for curly hair types since they can build up on the hair and leave curls weighed down.
Water Soluble Silicones
Water soluble silicones can easily be washed out of the hair with a regular shampoo, and won’t cause build up. Despite this however, some curly hair experts still recommend avoiding them – it all depends on how your hair responds to the product.
Some examples of water soluble silicones include:
- Dimethicone Copolyol
- Lauryl Methicone Copolyol
- Any silicone with “peg” as a prefix
If you spot any silicone with either “ppg” or “peg” in front of it, this is water soluble. An example is peg-7 amodimethicone.
Which OGX Shampoos Contain Non-Soluble Silicones?
Out of all the OGX shampoos I’ve reviewed, I’ve only come across two which contain non-soluble silicones, and two which are curly girl approved.
The two OGX shampoos which contain non-soluble silicones include:
- OGX Argan Oil Shampoo – contains dimethicone & amodimethicone
- OGX Biotin and Collagen Shampoo – contains dimethicone
All other OGX shampoos I’ve tested contain a water soluble silicone called peg-7 amodimethicone.
The table below links to all the OGX shampoos that I have reviewed and shows what type of silicones the product contains.
I will keep this post updated and add new OGX shampoos to the list as I review them. You can also watch all my OGX shampoo reviews over on my YouTube channel.
