OGX Kukui Oil Shampoo Review – Amazing for Frizzy Hair!

The OGX Defrizz Kukui Oil Shampoo is a great choice if you have frizzy, unruly or unmanageable hair. I have been testing out every shampoo that OGX make so I can compare them, and determine which is best for each hair type. This post is my full review of the OGX Kukui Oil shampoo and conditioner combo.

OGX Kukui oil shampoo review

If you have frizzy hair, Kukui nut oil is a great natural ingredient for adding moisture to the hair strands without weighing them down, or leaving the hair looking greasy. There are three products in the OGX Kukui Oil range: a shampoo, conditioner and anti-frizz hydrating oil.

Out of the 17 different OGX shampoos I’ve tested, I found the most similar to the Kukui Oil shampoo was the OGX Hydrate and Revive Argan Oil Shampoo. This shampoo was also excellent at reducing frizz, and leaving the hair glossy and shiny. As with Kukui Oil, Argan Oil is a very lightweight oil that won’t coat the hair or leave it heavy or lank.

In this post I’ll review what I loved about the Kukui oil shampoo, as well as what I didn’t like as much. I’ll also compare the OGX Kukui Oil shampoo with other similar shampoos made by OGX and other brands. You can see a full list of the OGX shampoos that I’ve reviewed in my post on the best OGX shampoo for every hair type.

Before I tell you about my experience of using this product, let’s look at what’s in it. The OGX Kukui Oil Shampoo contains two key ingredients: Kukui oil and rosemary leaf extract. Let’s look at these ingredients in a little more detail.

WHAT IS KUKUI OIL?

Kukui oil is also known as Aleurites Moluccanus Seed Oil. It is an oil that’s extracted from the nuts of the Hawaiian Kukui Nut Tree (also known as the Candlenut Tree).

In Hawaii, Kukui Oil is traditionally used to heal sunburn. It’s known for helping wounds to heal faster, and is also used to reduce pain.

The oil is also often used in cosmetic treatments since it is rich in essential fatty acids, and has anti-aging and moisturising benefits.

BENEFITS OF KUKUI OIL FOR THE HAIR

Since Kukui Oil is rich in amino and essential fatty acids, it helps to improve hair quality, and leave tresses looking shiny and glossy. The oil is also useful for soothing the scalp and reducing dryness or itching.

Kukui Oil is a very lightweight oil, so it absorbs easily into the hair without leaving any greasy residue. It’s also non-comedogenic, so if you’re using hair products containing Kukui oil they won’t cause breakouts.

Kukui Oil is excellent if you are trying to reduce frizz, soften coarse or unruly hair, or increase shine. It’s also a good choice for low porosity or fine hair types since it won’t build up on the hair or weight the strands down.

BENEFITS OF ROSEMARY EXTRACT FOR THE HAIR

As well as Kukui oil, this OGX shampoo also contains rosemary leaf extract! Rosemary has many benefits for both the hair and scalp including promoting hair growth and reducing dryness.

The ability of rosemary leaf extract to stimulate hair growth, and prevent hair loss has actually be proven in clinical trials. A study from 2015 showed that rosemary leaf extract was just as effective as minoxidil at stimulating hair growth. It was also found to be more successful than Minoxidil in treating an itchy scalp.

Another study from 2013 showed that rosemary leaf extract helped to prevent hair loss triggered by testosterone. This means it may be a promising treatment for male or female pattern baldness.

HOW TO USE THE OGX KUKUI OIL SHAMPOO

To use the OGX Kukui Oil Shampoo, apply a generous amount to soaking wet hair and massage in. After the shampoo has formed a lather, rinse it thoroughly. For the best results follow with the Hydrate & Defrizz+ Kukui Oil Conditioner.

OGX Kukui oil shampoo and conditioner

When it comes out of the bottle, the Kukui Oil shampoo has a pearlescent yellow colour, as shown in the photograph below. It has a sweet nutty scent, a bit like a Snickers bar or Ferrero Rocher. It’s not a very strong scent though, and doesn’t leave any fragrance on the hair.

As with all sulphate free shampoos, this product doesn’t lather very well. You need a lot of the product to produce a lather and even then the lather isn’t very rich.

The conditioner is also a yellow colour and has a sweet nutty fragrance. As you can see from the photograph below, the conditioner has a rich and creamy texture. The smooth silky texture glides easily through the hair, and helps to detangle any knots.

I found that this shampoo and conditioner combination was effective at reducing frizz and enhancing shine. My hair was left with a glossy finish and felt more moisturised and conditioned.

PROS AND CONS OF THE OGX KUKUI OIL SHAMPOO

Overall I enjoyed using this shampoo and would recommend it for anyone who has frizzy hair. Compared with other OGX shampoos I would say it is most similar to the OGX Argan Oil Shampoo and the OGX Liquid Pearl Shampoo in terms of its results. All three of these shampoos are good for increasing gloss and shine, and reducing frizz.

Out of these three shampoos, the Kukui Oil shampoo has the weakest scent. Both the Argan Oil and Liquid Pearl shampoos have a much stronger fragrance that lasts on the hair.

Pros

  • Reduces frizz
  • Makes hair glossy and smooth
  • Won’t weigh the hair down
  • Rosemary leaf extract promotes hair growth
  • Soothes the scalp

Cons

  • Too oily for greasy hair types
  • Doesn’t lather well
  • Weak scent (I like strongly perfumed shampoos)

OGX KUKUI OIL SHAMPOO INGREDIENTS

When researching the OGX Kukui Oil shampoo online I noticed other reviews which showed an ingredient list that did not contain rosemary leaf oil. I’m unsure if this is because the formulation has evolved over time, or if OGX formulations differ between countries (I’m in the United Kingdom).

All OGX shampoos contain a sulfate-free formula, and the Kukui Oil shampoo is no different. The photograph below shows the ingredient list from the shampoo I’m using.

FULL INGREDIENTS

Aqua/Water/Eau, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Glycol Distearate, Aleurites Moluccanus Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Polyquaternium-22, PEG-7 Amodimethicone, Sodium Hydrolyzed Potato Starch Dodecenylsuccinate, Linoleamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Polyquaternium-39, Laureth-4, PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate, PPG-2 Hydroxyethyl Cocamide, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Citrate, Hexylene Glycol, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Benzoate, Formic Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Disodium Tetrapropenyl Succinate, Glycerin, Coconut Acid, Parfum/Fragrance, Linalool, Limonene, CI 19140/Yellow 5, CI 15985/Yellow 6.

WHAT SETS THE OGX KUKUI OIL SHAMPOO APART FROM ITS COMPETITORS?

Whenever I review a product I always look at how it compares with other similar products on the market. Interestingly I could only find one other popular shampoo which contained kukui oil, and that was the Eight Triple Eight Kukui Oil Shampoo.

Unlike the OGX shampoo, the Eight Triple Eight Kukui Oil Shampoo contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS). SLS is a much harsher cleansing agent compared to the Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate which is found in the OGX shampoo. For this reason the Eight Triple Eight shampoo might be a better option for oily or greasy hair types.

The Eight Triple Eight shampoo also contains castor oil which is quite a heavy oil. This may be better suited to thick or high porosity hair since castor oil coats the hair shaft and helps to smooth raised hair cuticles.

I couldn’t find any evidence that Eight Triple Eight products are PETA certified, even though the company website states that the brand is cruelty free. Currently OGX are not cruelty free.

If cost is an issue, the Eight Triple Eight Shampoo is a more affordable option compared with the OGX shampoo. I’ve put the two shampoos side by side in the comparison table below so you can see the basic differences between the two.

If you are wanting a shampoo that contains ingredients that stimulate hair growth, the other OGX shampoo that I would recommend is the Teatree Mint shampoo. This shampoo contains peppermint oil which, like rosemary extract, has also been shown in clinical trials to stimulate hair growth.

HOW I TEST OUT PRODUCTS TO REVIEW

When I’m testing out a new shampoo I always use the product for at least a month before I write my review. This gives me enough time to test out the product thoroughly.

I also stop using any other products on my hair that could alter the way the shampoo works or the effect it has. My video reviews are always filmed after I have washed my hair with the shampoo with no other product on my hair.

I am aware when I test shampoo products that I have dry, fine and naturally curly hair, and I try to consider how the shampoo might perform on other hair types. In my reviews I give my own opinion of the product but also research other opinions across the internet, as well as discuss the product with my friends.

I am always interested to hear the opinions of my readers on any shampoos I have reviewed on my website, so there is a comment section at the end of each review for this purpose. I hope my reviews are helpful to others but if you have feedback on how I can make them better please let me know.
