OGX Keratin Oil Shampoo Review – Amazing for Growing Your Hair Out!

If you want stronger hair and fewer split ends, the OGX Keratin oil shampoo is my top choice! It contains strengthening ingredients and leaves the hair moisturised without weighing it down. This post is my full review of the OGX Keratin Oil shampoo and matching conditioner.

ogx keratin oil shampoo review

I love testing out OGX shampoos, and comparing them with each other. The Keratin Oil shampoo turned out to be one of the best shampoos from OGX that I’ve tested. It left my hair stronger and I had less breakage.

The OGX product I felt it was most similar to was the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo. This is because both shampoos contain both a protein and an oil; the Keratin Oil shampoo contains keratin protein and Argan oil, and the Coconut Milk shampoo contains egg white protein and coconut oil.

The results they had on my hair however were completely different, which I’ll explain later in this review. Overall, if you didn’t have good results with the Coconut Milk shampoo, the Keratin Oil shampoo may be for you!

If you want to check out all of the OGX shampoos I’ve tested and reviewed, you can find them in my post on the best OGX shampoos for every hair type.

What is Keratin Oil?

There is no such thing as “Keratin Oil”. The shampoo gets its name because it contains both Keratin extract and Argan oil. These two ingredients combined help to fortify the hair strands and make them strong, healthy and more elastic. For this reason this OGX shampoo is my top recommendation if you are trying to grow your hair long!

Benefits of Keratin Protein for the Hair

Keratin in Salon Hair Treatments

Keratin protein in hair treatments can help to strengthen high porosity hair that has been damaged from heat styling or chemical treatments. This is because applying keratin protein to the hair helps to seal raised hair cuticles and lock moisture and strength into the hair.

Keratin treatments are also great for curly hair as it makes it less frizzy, and easier to style. It can also make curly hair appear straighter. One well known keratin treatment, which I’ve actually had myself is the Brazilian keratin treatment, otherwise known as the Brazilian blowout. It makes the hair look straighter, adds shine and reduces frizz.

My hair is naturally curly and easily becomes frizzy and flyaway. I had the Brazilian keratin treatment done on my hair around ten years ago, just before I went travelling to Australia. You can see in the photograph below that it made my hair straighter and more shiny. Back then my hair was more damaged than it is now though, since I used to use hair straighteners almost every day!

Keratin in Shampoos, Conditioners & Serums

When it comes to keratin in hair care products like shampoos, it doesn’t have the same dramatic effect as salon treatments, but can still make the hair stronger. Products that contain “hydrolysed keratin” in the ingredients list can repair hair that has become brittle from heat styling and hair dyes.

One study from 2013 concluded that keratin was a promising ingredient for making the hair more resistant to damage. Since the OGX Keratin Oil shampoo contains hydrolysed keratin it should help to fortify the hair strands. Hydrolysed protein also makes the hair softer, shinier, more elastic, and gives it increased density.

Benefits of Argan Oil for the Hair

Argan oil moisturises and conditions the hair, and helps to improve scalp health. Since it has both anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, it may help to improve scalp conditions that cause hair loss such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis.

Since Argan oil has high content of vitamin E it may also help to prevent excess hair fall. A study from 2010 showed that vitamin E reduces oxidative stress on the scalp and improves hair growth.

Like keratin, Argan oil also increases hair elasticity and strength, and makes the hair shinier. It’s a popular hair oil for all hair types since it’s lightweight and absorbs easily into the hair shaft.

How to Use the OGX Keratin Oil Shampoo

To use the OGX Anti-Breakage+ Keratin Oil pH Balanced Shampoo apply a generous amount to wet hair and massage into the hair and scalp. After the shampoo has formed a lather, rinse it thoroughly from the hair before applying the OGX Keratin oil conditioner.

OGX Keratin Oil Shampoo and Conditioner

This shampoo has a strong exotic fruity scent but it doesn’t leave your hair perfumed, like some other OGX shampoos do. When it comes out of the bottle it has a pearlescent yellow colour, which is shown in the photograph below. Like most OGX shampoos I have tested, it doesn’t lather very well. I expected this however since the formula doesn’t contain sulphates.

The OGX Keratin Oil Conditioner also has a pale yellow colour and strong fruity scent. Compared with other OGX conditioners I’ve tried, I found the texture to be thicker and creamier. I feel like the OGX conditioners which contain Argan oil such as this one, and the OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Conditioner, are richer and more moisturising.

I had really good results with this shampoo and conditioner. My hair was left stronger and shinier, and it was easy to style and brush. I had a much better experience with this shampoo compared with the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo, but I think that’s because Argan oil is better for my hair type than coconut oil.

If you’ve tried the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo and found it left your hair feeling greasy and weighed down, I would advise you to try this one instead. It has all the strengthening benefits of the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo, but contains a far more lightweight oil, and won’t coat the hair strands.

Pros and Cons of the OGX Keratin Oil Shampoo

Overall I had a positive experience with the OGX Keratin Oil Shampoo. The keratin proteins strengthen the hair, and Argan oil conditions and moisturises dry strands.

Compared with the OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo, I personally prefer the Argan oil product simply because I love the smell. I found that the results of both shampoos were quite similar. Both left a luminescent shine on my tresses, and both helped to hydrate my dry hair.

My summary of the pros and cons of the OGX Keratin Oil shampoo are as follows.

Pros

  • Strengthens the hair
  • Makes the hair shiny and glossy
  • Nice exotic fruity scent
  • Improves scalp health
  • Excellent for helping to grow the hair long

Cons

  • Does not lather well
  • May not work well on an oily scalp
  • Doesn’t leave your hair scented

OGX Keratin Oil Shampoo Ingredients

OGX sometimes change their formulations, so check the shampoo bottle for the latest ingredients. Earlier versions of this shampoo may have contained dmdm hydantoin, but this ingredient was removed from all OGX shampoos in September 2021 following claims that it was linked to hair loss.

What Sets the OGX Keratin Oil Shampoo Apart From its Competitors?

OGX actually make two shampoos which contain keratin. The second one is the OGX Brazilian Keratin Smooth Shampoo. Other popular keratin shampoos on the market include the HASK Keratin Protein Smoothing Shampoo, and the TRESemme Keratin Smooth Shampoo.

I have compared these four keratin shampoos in the table below to see what makes them different from each other.

If you have fine, thin hair like I do then the best two keratin shampoos for you would either be the OGX Keratin Oil shampoo or the TRESemme Keratin Shampoo. This is because these products do not contain any heavy oils that could weigh the hair down. The OGX shampoo contains Argan oil, and the TRESemme shampoo contains marula oil. Both Argan and marula oil are lightweight and easily absorbed.

If you have thick curly hair and want to enhance your curls whilst growing your hair out, your best choice is the HASK Keratin shampoo. This is because it contains good ingredients for thick curly hair such as coconut oil and jojoba oil.

HASK Keratin Smooth Shampoo

Unfortunately OGX is still not cruelty free, but both the TRESemme and HASK shampoos are cruelty free, and are good alternatives if you don’t want to use products that aren’t PETA certified.

The TRESemme shampoo is the only Keratin shampoo out of the four which contains sulphates. Sulphates make the shampoo form a lather, and help to clean excess sebum from the hair and scalp. You may prefer this shampoo if you have an oily scalp but dry hair.

If you are wanting a keratin shampoo to make your hair straighter, the OGX Brazilian Keratin Shampoo is the best choice. I have tested all four of these shampoos and I didn’t like the OGX Brazilian Keratin Shampoo at all. I thought it left my hair looking dull and flat. This might be because it contains heavy ingredients like cocoa butter and coconut oil.

Out of the four I liked the TRESemme shampoo the most as I thnk it gave me the best results. After using it my hair was really glossy and strong. The OGX Keratin Shampoo was a close second though.

HOW I TEST OUT PRODUCTS TO REVIEW

When I’m testing out a new shampoo I always use the product for at least a month before I write my review. This gives me enough time to test out the product thoroughly.

I also stop using any other products on my hair that could alter the way the shampoo works or the effect it has. My video reviews are always filmed after I have washed my hair with the shampoo with no other product on my hair.

I am aware when I test shampoo products that I have dry, fine and naturally curly hair, and I try to consider how the shampoo might perform on other hair types. In my reviews I give my own opinion of the product but also research other opinions across the internet, as well as discuss the product with my friends.

I am always interested to hear the opinions of my readers on any shampoos I have reviewed on my website, so there is a comment section at the end of each review for this purpose. I hope my reviews are helpful to others but if you have feedback on how I can make them better please let me know.
