OGX make a wide range of hair care products containing exotic ingredients. Since they became one of my favourite shampoo brands, I’ve been on a mission to test and review all of their products. This is my review of the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo and the matching conditioner.

The OGX Coconut Milk shampoo was included in my post on the best OGX shampoos for every hair type since I found it to be the top choice for high porosity hair that needed some extra moisture and strength. The product contains coconut milk, coconut oil, and egg white protein, which help to rebuild damaged hair and add hydration.

What is Coconut Milk?
Coconut milk is made by grating up the white fleshy part of a coconut and mixing it with water. You can create a thinner milk by adding more water, or a rich coconut cream by reducing the amount of water.
Coconut milk is not the same as coconut water, which is the liquid found inside the coconut. It is also very different from coconut oil or coconut butter. Coconut oil is made by extracting the oil content from coconut flesh or coconut milk.
The OGX Coconut Milk shampoo contains both coconut milk and coconut oil.
Benefits of Coconut Milk for Hair
Coconut helps to restore moisture and strength to the hair. It is high in lauric acid which is a fatty acid that’s able to penetrate the hair shaft and strengthen the cuticle.
Coconut also helps to improve scalp health. Since coconut oil is so moisturising it can help to reduce dryness on the scalp, and soothe any itching. It’s also anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal which makes it an excellent natural ingredient to treat dandruff.
Another benefit of coconut milk is that it contains high amounts of protein. This can help to make the hair stronger. It also helps to reduce protein loss from both damaged and undamaged hair, when it is applied either before or after washing.
The high protein content of coconut milk makes it a good ingredient for high porosity hair types.
What is High Porosity Hair?
If you have high porosity hair, your hair absorbs moisture very quickly but also looses it quickly too. This is because the hair cuticles on high porosity hair are raised and open. Signs that you might have high porosity hair include dryness, dullness and frizz.
Hair that is very porous is fragile and can break easily. This type of hair needs a lot of protein to help reduce breakage, and make the hair stronger, thicker and more elastic. Silk, keratin, wheat, or egg protein are all excellent at helping to fortify porous hair. You can use a protein conditioner, mask or shampoo, or make your own hair treatment using an egg.
High porosity hair also benefits from heavy oils like castor, coconut or olive oils. These oils coat the hair shaft, seal the hair cuticles and help the hair to retain moisture.
The Coconut Milk Shampoo is perfect for high porosity hair since it contains coconut milk which is rich in protein, egg white protein, and coconut oil.
How to Use the Coconut Milk Shampoo
For the best results the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo should be used along with the matching conditioner. Apply the product generously to wet hair and massage into the hair and scalp. Once the shampoo has formed a lather on the hair, rinse it thoroughly before applying the conditioner.

When the shampoo comes out of the bottle it appears as a pearlescent white colour (shown in the photograph below). It has a lovely fruity, coconut scent, and a silky texture. Although it smells of coconut, it’s not a strong scent and doesn’t leave your hair perfumed.
The cleanser that is used in this shampoo is sodium c14-16 olefin sulfonate which I found dries my hair out. My hair is already especially dry, so if you have hair that is dry but gets easily greasy, you may find that this product works well for you.

The conditioner had a much stronger coconut smell compared to the shampoo. Since both the shampoo and conditioner contain coconut oil, they leave a coating on the hair to help seal in moisture and protect it.
While this might be good for certain hair types, it didn’t work well on my own hair which is very fine and thin. This is because coconut oil weighs the hair down slightly and can leave thin hair looking a flat and lank.

Overall I found that using both the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo and conditioner left my hair quite dry and lank. The cleanser in the shampoo was too harsh for my hair, and the coconut oil weighed down the strands and left my hair looking flat. If you have dry hair that gets quite greasy, and your hair is not fine then you may get better results than me.
Pros and Cons of the OGX Coconut Milk Shampoo
After testing this shampoo I recommend that it would work well for high porosity hair that is brittle. It would be better for oily scalps rather than dry scalps, and in my opinion and would not suit fine hair types.
Pros
- It’s free from SLS and SLES – the shampoo is sulfate free which means it shouldn’t strip the natural oils from your hair and scalp. The cleanser it contains is less harsh and irritating than SLS or SLES.
- Makes hair stronger – since it contains protein it helps to fortify the strands and makes them less likely to break or snap.
- Locks in moisture – the coconut oil in the product helps to seal hydration into the hair, making it less frizzy and more elastic.
- Affordable – I bought my bottle from Boots for £3.49. It was part of an offer at the time but I thought this was good value for money.
- Nice scent – It has a nice coconut smell.
Cons
- Weighs the hair down – if you have fine hair strands the coconut oil can weigh the hair down and leave it looking flat and lank.
- May dry hair out – although the shampoo is SLS and SLES free, the form of cleanser used may still be too harsh for certain hair types.
- Doesn’t lather well – since the shampoo is free from sulfates it won’t form a good lather on the hair. If you like shampoos that lather, this may not be the right one for you.
- Fades hair color – I believe the cleanser in this shampoo may be too harsh for colored hair, and might cause your color to fade quicker.

What Sets the OGX Coconut Milk Shampoo Apart From it Competitors?
There are two other major shampoo brands that make a coconut milk shampoo. These are:
- Garnier Ultimate Blends Coconut Milk Shampoo
- Herbal Essences Biorenew Coconut Milk Shampoo
Like the OGX Coconut Milk Shampoo, the Garnier Ultimate Blends and Herbal Essences shampoos both come with matching coconut milk conditioners.
I compared the three shampoos and looked at what set the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo apart from its competitors.
Before we look at these three products in more depth, the comparison table below shows a basic overview of each shampoo.
Comparison Table

From the comparison table above we can see that the OGX shampoo is the only one that contains both egg white proteins and coconut milk in the ingredients. Since it has more protein in it compared with the other shampoos, it would be the better choice if you are searching for a shampoo for high porosity hair.
The OGX shampoo is also the only of the three shampoos to be free from harsh sulfates. This means it’s more gentle on the hair compared with the Garnier Ultimate Blends Coconut Milk shampoo and the Herbal Essences Coconut Milk shampoo. This means it’s better for dry or fragile hair.
If you have an extremely oily scalp however, or prefer shampoos that form a thick lather, you would be better off choosing either the Garnier or Herbal Essences shampoos. Although they contain SLS which is a very harsh cleansing agent, they may make your hair feel cleaner if you’re prone to greasy hair.
The Garnier and Herbal Essences shampoos also contain other moisturising ingredients that the OGX coconut shampoo doesn’t have. These include aloe and macadamia oil. These ingredients are often found in hair products that reduce dryness and increase shine.
I enjoyed testing all three of these products. They all had a pleasant creamy coconut scent, and contain ingredients that promote healthy hair. They were all a bit too drying for my own hair, but could each work well as a moisturizing shampoo for someone with less sensitive hair than mine.
Unfortunately OGX is not cruelty free unlike Garnier and Herbal Essences. It’s important to me to recommend brands that are PETA certified and cruelty free. If OGX ever become cruelty free in the future, I will update this post.

FAQS ABOUT THE OGX COCONUT MILK SHAMPOO
Is OGX Coconut Milk shampoo good for oily hair?
If you have very oily hair the cleansing agent in the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo may not be strong enough to clean your hair properly. If you don’t want to use shampoos that contain sulfates, try using the OGX Charcoal Shampoo which is better suited to oily hair types.
Is OGX Coconut Milk Shampoo good for your hair?
The OGX Coconut Milk shampoo is sulfate free and contains ingredients that strengthen and moisturise the hair. If you have dry hair that’s prone to frizz this shampoo might work well for you.
I would not recommend the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo for thin or fine hair, or hair that’s extremely dry and sensitive. This is because coconut oil can weigh down the hair strands of fine hair, and the cleansing agent in the product may be too drying for certain hair types.
Does OGX Coconut Milk have sulfate?
No, there are no sulfates in the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo.
Does OGX Coconut Milk shampoo have silicone?
Yes, there are silicones in the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo including dimethicone and amodimethicone.
Is OGX Coconut Milk shampoo color safe?
OGX advise that all of their shampoos are gentle enough for color treated hair, however from my experience it caused the hair dye to fade quicker.
Does the OGX Coconut Milk Shampoo cause hair loss?
A recent lawsuit alleged that OGX products caused hair loss because they contained an ingredient called DMDM Hydantoin. This ingredient is a preservative that prevents mould from growing in the shampoo. There is currently no evidence that DMDM Hydantoin causes hair loss however OGX removed it from all of their products in September 2021.
How I Test Out Products to Review
When I’m testing out a new shampoo I always use the product for at least a month before I write my review. This gives me enough time to test out the product thoroughly.
I also stop using any other products on my hair that could alter the way the shampoo works or the effect it has. My video reviews are always filmed after I have washed my hair with the shampoo with no other product on my hair.
I am aware when I test shampoo products that I have dry, fine and naturally curly hair, and I try to consider how the shampoo might perform on other hair types. In my reviews I give my own opinion of the product but also research other opinions across the internet, as well as discuss the product with my friends.
I am always interested to hear the opinions of my readers on any shampoos I have reviewed on my website, so there is a comment section at the end of each review for this purpose. I hope my reviews are helpful to others but if you have feedback on how I can make them better please let me know.
