Does OGX Shampoo Have Salt?

If you are searching for an OGX shampoo to use after a keratin treatment, don’t be fooled into thinking the OGX Brazilian Keratin Smooth or the OGX Keratin Oil shampoos would be good options. Both of these shampoos contain Sodium Chloride and Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate which are not good ingredients for keratin treated hair.

Sodium Chloride is regular table salt. It can dry the hair out, and strip keratin from the hair strands. Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate is a mixture of sulfonate salts, and although it isn’t as harsh as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), it can still strip keratin from the hair shaft.

The photograph below shows the ingredients in the OGX Keratin Oil Shampoo. In the first line you can see that both Sodium Chloride and Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate are listed. This is the same for the OGX Brazilian Keratin Smooth Shampoo.

Is Salt Free Shampoo the Same as Sulfate Free?

No, salt free and sulfate free are not the same.

Most shampoos contain sulfates which are different variations of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). Sulfates act as cleansing agents to remove oil, and dirt from the hair.

Sodium chloride is a different substance. It is also included in most shampoos, as a thickening agent and to help detoxify the hair and scalp.

Most OGX shampoos are SLS free, but none of them are salt free. You will see in the ingredients list that instead of SLS, OGX shampoos have milder cleansing agents such as Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate or Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate. All OGX shampoos however have sodium chloride listed in the ingredients.

Why You Should be Using a Salt Free Shampoo on Keratin Treated Hair

If you’ve had a Brazilian blowout or Brazilian keratin treatment on your hair, you should be avoiding any shampoos which contain either sulphate or salt (sodium chloride).

All regular shampoos contain salt, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you haven’t had a treatment on your hair. Salt acts as a thickening agent in the shampoo mixture, and helps to clean the hair, and remove toxins and dry skin from the scalp.

Some people actually add salt to their shampoo to help exfoliate the scalp and deeply cleanse the hair. Salt can be used to treat scalp problems and stimulate hair growth.

If you have keratin treated hair however, you should not be using hair care products which contain salt. Salt will strip the keratin from your hair quickly, and could leave it dry and frizzy. You would only want to use salt on your hair if the keratin treatment has gone wrong, and you want to remove it.

How Do I Know if my Shampoo is Salt Free?

If you want to be sure that your shampoo is salt free, you should check the ingredients list for sodium. Sodium chloride is not the only salt used in shampoo. There are many other salts frequently used such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). Check for any ingredient with sodium at the front.

What Shampoo Has No Salt?

When I had the Brazilian Keratin Treatment on my hair several years ago, I couldn’t find a good drugstore shampoo that was completely free of salt. I ended up using the NYK1 Salt Free Sulphate Free Aftercare Shampoo and Conditioner. It’s more expensive than OGX shampoos, but I decided it was worth the extra cost rather than paying to have my Brazilian Blowout re-done sooner.

Is OGX a Sulfate Free Shampoo?

Yes, nearly all OGX shampoos are free from sulfates. This means OGX shampoos are more gentle than other shampoos, and less likely to strip your colour, or leave your scalp irritated.

Sulfate free shampoo is also better for the environment since sulfates that get washed down the drain may end up harming fish and aquatic animals.

Does OGX have Sodium Lauryl Sulfate?

No. All OGX shampoos are free from both sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. These are two of the most common sulfates used in shampoos, and are both associated with scalp irritation and dry hair.

Is it Safe to Use OGX Shampoo?

OGX is safe to use, but if you are looking for a shampoo that is completely free from salt, OGX would not be the best brand. If you have had a keratin treatment, OGX shampoo may strip the keratin from your hair, or leave your hair dry and frizzy.

If you are just looking for a gentle shampoo however, then OGX shampoos are a great choice! I’ve written a post to help my readers decide which OGX shampoo is best for their own hair type, as well as OGX shampoo reviews for every product I’ve tested.

Does OGX Still Have DMDM?

No. OGX stopped using DMDM Hydantoin in all of their products in September 2021. Instead they are using a preservative called Sodium Benzoate, which is naturally found in cinnamon.
