Biotin and collagen are both excellent ingredients for helping to strengthen the hair and add volume. Since my hair is fine and thin I was excited to test out the OGX Biotin and Collagen shampoo to see if it would make a difference. This post is my full review of the OGX Biotin and Collagen Shampoo, and the matching conditioner.
I’ve been on a mission to test out every single OGX shampoo to find out which is the best OGX shampoo for each hair type. The OGX Biotin and Collagen shampoo stood out to me as the top choice for hair that is thin or fine. It contains ingredients that help to make the hair look thicker and fuller.

What does OGX Biotin and Collagen do?
The OGX Biotin and Collagen shampoo and conditioner were formulated to help thicken fine hair. They help to give the appearance of more fullness and volume, and make the hair denser over time. They also add more texture to thin hair leaving it looking healthier.
Biotin and collagen are often found in hair products that promote strength and growth. The Biotin and Collagen shampoo has become one of the brand’s most popular products due to its effectiveness at giving limp hair a boost of volume. OGX also make a dry shampoo in the Biotin and Collagen range.
Benefits of Biotin for Hair
Biotin is also known as Vitamin B7. It has been known to help promote hair health both when it’s ingested, or when it’s applied topically to the scalp. It boosts shine and volume, as well as stimulates hair growth in women with thinning hair.
Currently there are more studies proving that biotin boosts hair growth when it is taken as a supplement rather than used in hair products. Two studies, one from 2012 and one from 2015, both showed that biotin supplementation increases hair quality and growth after 90 days.
When applied topically to the scalp, in the form of a shampoo or hair mask, biotin may strengthen hair strands and nourish the root. It helps to reduce breakages and increase the strength and elasticity of new hair growth.
Benefits of Collagen for Hair
Collagen helps to protect the skin that contains the hair root by making it stronger and more elastic. By protecting the skin around the hair root, collagen may help to delay age related hair loss.
There are currently more clinical trials looking at collagen benefits through supplementation rather than topical treatments. They are also usually focused on the skin rather than the hair.
In a study from 2014, oral collagen supplementation was shown to significantly increase skin elasticity. If collagen strengthens the skin around the hair root however, it may also reduce hair thinning.
How to Use the OGX Biotin and Collagen Shampoo
To use the OGX Thick & Full Biotin & Collagen Shampoo, apply a generous amount to wet hair and massage into the hair and scalp. Rinse thoroughly before applying the OGX Biotin and Collagen Conditioner.
This shampoo has a very sweet scent that smells a bit like sherbet. Unlike some of the other OGX shampoos I’ve tried, like the Argan Oil Shampoo, the fragrance doesn’t remain on your hair after you wash it.
The shampoo has a pearlescent purple colour to it which is shown in the photograph below. I found that it didn’t lather very well, but I expected this to be the case since the shampoo doesn’t contain sulphates.
Like the shampoo, the conditioner has a pale purple colour, shown in the photograph below. It has a stronger and sweeter scent than the shampoo, but again the scent doesn’t last on the hair.
I found that this shampoo did a good job at making my hair appear thicker and fuller. Particularly around the roots I noticed that my hair had more volume and appeared healthier. The shampoo also made my hair feel softer and it was easier to style.
If you have thin and dry hair, like I do, this is a great shampoo not only for adding volume, but also moisturising the hair strands. From first use I noticed my hair was more hydrated and my curls were more defined.
Pros and Cons of the Biotin and Collagen Shampoo
My own hair is thin, dry and curly but I also think this shampoo work work well for straight hair or wavy hair. Overall I think it’s the best shampoo from OGX for adding volume to flat tresses. It helps to promote healthy hair and gives it a beautiful boost.

OGX Biotin and Collagen Shampoo Ingredients
We have already looked at the benefits of two of the key ingredients in this shampoo, biotin and collagen, but there’s also a third key ingredient – hydrolyzed wheat protein!
Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein
Wheat protein is a popular ingredient in shampoos and conditioners designed to strengthen the hair. It can be used to fortify and repair curly, dry, coloured, or damaged hair.
A study from 2018 showed that the high numbers of disulfide bonds in wheat protein can help to rebuild broken bonds in the hair. The results of the study showed that wheat protein strengthened brittle hair, and made the hair surface smoother.
The OGX Biotin and Collagen shampoo contains hydrolyzed wheat protein as its third key ingredient. The formula should therefore not only make the hair thicker, but also make it stronger and less likely to break.

What Sets the OGX Biotin and Collagen Shampoo Apart from its Competitors?
I did some research to find out whether there were any alternatives to the OGX Biotin and Collagen shampoo, and what sets the shampoo apart from its competitors. In total I found seven shampoos that were similar. The shampoos below all contain similar ingredients and are designed to thicken the hair.
- HASK – Biotin Boost Thickening Shampoo
- Renpure – Biotin & Collagen Thickening Shampoo
- Xpel Biotin & Collagen Thickening Shampoo
- Jason Biotin Shampoo
- New York Biology Biotin Shampoo
- Avalon Organics Biotin-B Complex Thickening Shampoo
- Briogeo Blossom & Bloom – Ginseng + Biotin Hair Volumizing Shampoo
The two shampoos that I felt were the closest to the OGX shampoo when looking at the price, formula and popularity were the Avalon Organics Biotin-B Complex Thickening Shampoo and the HASK Biotin Boost Thickening Shampoo. I have compared these two products to the OGX shampoo in the comparison table below.
Comparison Table

You can see from the comparison table above that all three shampoos are sulphate free, and designed to boost volume in thin hair. If you are suffering from hair loss and want to boost growth, the HASK shampoo may be the better option for you since the formula contains coffee (which contains caffeine). Caffeine is known to increase blood flow in the scalp, and stimulate hair growth.
The Avalon Organics shampoo is quite similar to the OGX shampoo in that it contains biotin and a form of protein (quinoa protein). Like the OGX shampoo it works well at strengthening the hair strands and reducing breakage. The Avalon Organics shampoo also contains saw palmetto which reduces hair loss, and vitamin E to maintain a healthy scalp.
If you are looking for a similar product to the OGX Biotin and Collagen shampoo that is cruelty free, the Avalon Organics shampoo is the best choice. Unfortunately OGX is not cruelty free, but the Avalon Organics is a very similar alternative that doesn’t test on animals.

FAQs About the OGX Biotin and Collagen Shampoo
Does Biotin and Collagen shampoo really work?
From my experience, the Biotin and Collagen shampoo does work to add volume to fine hair. I would recommend this shampoo for anyone with dry, thin or sparse hair. If your hair has become flat due to product buildup or because it gets greasy however, you may be better off trying the OGX Charcoal Shampoo or the OGX Teatree Mint Shampoo.
Is OGX shampoo good for thinning hair?
The OGX Biotin & Collagen Shampoo contains a formula which is designed to volumize fine and thin hair. It works well on hair that appears limp, lifeless and flat to make it look thicker and fuller. Although it may also help to reduce hair fall, this didn’t happen in my case.
Which OGX shampoo is best for hair loss?
The OGX Tea Tree mint shampoo contains peppermint oil which has been shown in clinical trials to stimulate hair growth. It also contains tea tree and witch hazel which both help to create a healthy environment on the scalp. If you are trying to prevent hair loss and stimulate growth, I would recommend the OGX Tea Tree Mint Shampoo as the best choice.
HOW I TEST OUT PRODUCTS TO REVIEW
When I’m testing out a new shampoo I always use the product for at least a month before I write my review. This gives me enough time to test out the product thoroughly.
I also stop using any other products on my hair that could alter the way the shampoo works or the effect it has. My video reviews are always filmed after I have washed my hair with the shampoo with no other product on my hair.
I am aware when I test shampoo products that I have dry, fine and naturally curly hair, and I try to consider how the shampoo might perform on other hair types. In my reviews I give my own opinion of the product but also research other opinions across the internet, as well as discuss the product with my friends.
I am always interested to hear the opinions of my readers on any shampoos I have reviewed on my website, so there is a comment section at the end of each review for this purpose. I hope my reviews are helpful to others but if you have feedback on how I can make them better please let me know.
