OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo Review

The OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo is a good choice if you have greasy hair which is also brittle. I’ve tested out the whole range of OGX shampoos and conditioners to be able to compare them and recommend which ones are best for different hair types. This post is my full review of the OGX Apple Cider Vinegar shampoo and the matching conditioner.

OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo review

The OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo has become one of my favourite OGX shampoos. My own hair is thin and dry, however I think this shampoo would be ideal for oily and brittle hair. If you want to check out all my OGX shampoo reviews, I’ve listed the best OGX shampoos for every hair type.

OGX make three different products in the Apple Cider Vinegar range: a shampoo, conditioner and hair rinse. In this post I have only reviewed the shampoo and conditioner. I have also compared them to other similar apple cider vinegar shampoos on the market.

What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is apple juice which has been fermented. This involves adding yeast to apple juice which turns the sugar in the juice into alcohol. Bacteria then turn the alcohol into acetic acid.

Apple cider vinegar is an ancient remedy for a wide range of health conditions including promoting hair health. It is also claimed to help with weight management although there are no scientific studies to prove that it works.

Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar for Hair

Apple cider vinegar is often used as a hair treatment since it is able to help rebalance the pH level of the hair. If your hair has become frizzy or brittle this may be because the pH level is too alkaline. The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar is able to lower the pH level of the hair, making it healthier and stronger.

If you regularly use hair dye on your hair, the ammonia in the dye makes the hair more alkaline in order to absorb the colour. Apple cider vinegar can help to rebalance the pH level of the hair after chemical treatments like colouring.

There are claims that apple cider vinegar can reduce dandruff and scalp irritation, promote growth, enhance the natural curl pattern in curly hair, and smooth the hair cuticle in frizzy hair (source).

Although I couldn’t find any studies that proved this, I did find one study which showed that shampoos with high alkalinity lead to increased friction, breakage, and dryness. It concluded that lower pH shampoos (like apple cider vinegar shampoo) generate less negative static electricity on the hair and cause less frizz.

How to Use the OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo

To use the shampoo, apply it generously to wet hair and massage into the scalp. After rinsing the shampoo apply the OGX Apple Cider Vinegar conditioner. For the best results I think you are supposed to use the OGX Apple Cider Vinegar rinse in between the shampoo and conditioner, but I only tested the shampoo and conditioner.

When the shampoo comes out of the bottle it has a lovely fruity fragrance that smells like apple. Like all OGX shampoos it doesn’t lather very well since it is free from sulphates, so you need to apply a generous amount. The shampoo comes out of the bottle completely clear, even though it looks slightly yellow when it’s in the bottle. The photograph below shows what the shampoo looks like.

OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo

The conditioner comes out of the bottle completely white, as shown in the photograph below. I was surprised at how moisturising this conditioner was. Since the OGX Apple Cider Vinegar range is designed to clarify oily hair and remove residue and build up, I was expecting the conditioner to be less moisturising than other OGX conditioners. This was not the case. I found the conditioner to be creamy and hydrating.

OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Conditioner

The other OGX shampoo and conditioner which is designed for oily hair is the OGX Charcoal Shampoo and Conditioner. In comparison with that range I found the apple cider vinegar range to be much better at infusing moisture and strength.

Pros and Cons of the OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo

Before testing out the OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo, my favourite OGX shampoo had been the OGX Liquid Pearl Shampoo. Now I can’t decide which shampoo I prefer since I loved this shampoo so much. The product is designed to remove product buildup and unwanted oil, however I have dry hair and found that the shampoo did a good job at cleaning my hair whilst still leaving it moisturised.

If you have had hair loss, I’ve read articles that claim that apple cider vinegar promotes scalp health and creates the best environment for hair growth. Personally I didn’t feel that this shampoo made my hair grow any faster, but it did leave my hair beautifully shiny, moisturised and clean.

Since apple cider vinegar helps to restore the pH balance of the hair I would recommend this for oily hair that is also brittle or frizzy. I found it left my hair smooth and healthy looking.

Pros

  • Removes oil and product build up
  • Leaves hair really clean and shiny
  • Strengthens brittle hair
  • Reduces frizz
  • Rebalances pH level of hair
  • Leaves hair smooth and moisturised
  • Leaves a fruity scent on your hair

Cons

  • If your hair is very greasy you may prefer the OGX Charcoal shampoo
  • Doesn’t lather very well
  • You need to use a lot of the shampoo to clean your hair well

OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo Ingredients

The photograph below shows the list of ingredients on the back of my shampoo bottle. Since this is a sulfate-free shampoo, OGX are using Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate as their cleansing ingredient. This cleansing agent is not as harsh as sulfate, but some people may still find it drying. My hair gets dry easily but with this particular shampoo and conditioner combination I didn’t have a problem with dryness.

Full Ingredients

Aqua/Water/Eau, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Citric Acid, Vinegar, Polyquaternium-22, PEG-7 Amodimethicone, Linoleamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Polyquaternium-39, Sodium Hydrolyzed Potato Starch Dodecenylsuccinate, Coconut Acid, PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate, PPG-2 Hydroxyethyl Cocamide, Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Hexylene Glycol, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Benzoate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Disodium Tetrapropenyl Succinate, Parfum/Fragrance, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Benzyl Salicylate.

What Sets the OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo Apart from it’s Competitors

When researching how the OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo compares to similar products on the market, I found two main competitors from Aveeno and Avalon Organics. Both these brands make apple cider vinegar shampoos that help to rebalance the pH level of the hair, and revive tired, dull locks.

I have put the three apple cider vinegar shampoos side by side in the comparison table below so you can see the basic differences between them.

From the comparison table you can see that all three shampoos are sulphate free. The Avalon Organics and Aveeno shampoos both contain additional moisturising ingredients.

The Aveeno shampoo contains colloidal oatmeal which has been used for centuries to treat dry skin conditions. The Avalon Organics shampoo contains nettle extract which helps to prevent hair loss and Argan oil which improves scalp health.

Out of the three products, the Avalon Organic shampoo is the only one which is cruelty free, and the OGX shampoo is the best value for money out of the three.

I personally preferred the OGX shampoo because it left my hair really shiny and smooth. If you have an itchy scalp or hair loss however, you may prefer the Aveeno or Avalon Organics shampoos since they contain additional natural ingredients to help with these issues.

FAQ About the OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo

Is apple cider vinegar shampoo good for your hair?

Apple cider vinegar has multiple benefits for the hair including removing excess oil and product buildup. It helps to rebalance the pH level of the hair and make the hair healthier and stronger. It also promotes a healthy scalp environment and helps to reduce dandruff.

Can you use apple cider vinegar shampoo everyday?

If you have very greasy hair you can use an apple cider vinegar shampoo everyday to keep your hair clean and shiny. I use the apple cider vinegar shampoo every 1-2 days and find that this works well for me but my hair is quite dry.

Can apple cider vinegar ruin your hair?

If you are using apple cider vinegar on it’s own it may strip the hair of its natural oils if you use it too frequently. If you are using an apple cider vinegar shampoo however, the apple cider vinegar has already been diluted so it won’t ruin your hair.

Does apple cider vinegar stop hair loss?

I have read that apple cider vinegar can be used as a remedy to prevent hair loss, however I have not found any scientific studies to back up these claims. Since I started using an apple cider vinegar shampoo I didn’t notice any difference to the amount of hair I was loosing after each wash. I also saw no increase in hair growth.

HOW I TEST OUT PRODUCTS TO REVIEW

When I’m testing out a new shampoo I always use the product for at least a month before I write my review. This gives me enough time to test out the product thoroughly.

I also stop using any other products on my hair that could alter the way the shampoo works or the effect it has. My video reviews are always filmed after I have washed my hair with the shampoo with no other product on my hair.

I am aware when I test shampoo products that I have dry, fine and naturally curly hair, and I try to consider how the shampoo might perform on other hair types. In my reviews I give my own opinion of the product but also research other opinions across the internet, as well as discuss the product with my friends.

I am always interested to hear the opinions of my readers on any shampoos I have reviewed on my website, so there is a comment section at the end of each review for this purpose. I hope my reviews are helpful to others but if you have feedback on how I can make them better please let me know.
