7 Best OGX Shampoos for Curly Hair in 2023

I’ve been on a mission to discover the best OGX shampoo for curly hair. OGX make some great curly hair shampoos that suit dry curly hair, frizzy curly hair, or greasy curly hair. This post lists the top shampoos by OGX to help you achieve bouncy, defined curls.

Curly hair is more fragile and drier than other hair types. This is because the natural oils from the scalp find it harder to travel down the hair shaft of curls or coils. This means the ends of the hair can easily dry out, and are not well protected.

Since curly hair is more prone to damage, it requires special care to keep it healthy, strong and moisturised. A good shampoo for curly hair will infuse the hair with moisture and won’t leave it dry or frizzy. All of the shampoos in this post have been hand picked and tested on different curly hair types.

What are Good Ingredients for Curly Hair?

A few ingredients that may work well for curly, coily or wavy tresses are: vitamin E, coconut oil, aloe vera juice, panthenol and castor oil. These can all help to condition the hair and keep it moisturised.

• Vitamin E is an antioxidant which helps to protect your hair and scalp.
• Coconut oil is perfect if you’re looking for something light to moisturise your hair without making it greasy.
• Aloe vera juice is the ideal treatment for dry or frizzy hair; it can really help to reduce flyaways too.

You will see in this post, coconut is a common ingredient in many of the OGX shampoos recommended for curly hair. Coconut is ideal for curls since it is able to penetrate into the hair shaft, add moisture, replace lost protein, and make the hair stronger.

What about the ingredients I should try to avoid?

Products with drying alcohols and sulphates can strip curly hair of moisture and cause dryness. In some curly hair types silicones may weigh the hair down and leave it looking flat, however this is not always the case. There has been recent controversy over the ingredient dmdm hydantoin which was rumoured to cause hair loss. Although this has not been proved, many shampoo brands are now choosing to make shampoos that are dmdm hydantoin free.

OGX announced in September 2021 that they have removed DMDM Hydantoin from all of their products. They are instead using Sodium Benzoate which is a a preservative that’s naturally found in cinnamon, and often used by the food industry.
