OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo Review

As a big OGX fan, I’ve tested out nearly all their shampoos. The Argan oil shampoo was one of my favourites due to the amazing smell and the way it leaves my hair so shiny and glossy. This is my full review of the OGX Argan oil of Morocco shampoo and the matching conditioner.

Argan oil of morocco shampoo review

I’ve tested out nearly all the shampoos and conditioners in the OGX range, and the Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo had the strongest smell out of all of them. It also left my hair shinier and more glossy compared to other OGX shampoos. All my OGX shampoo reviews can be found in my post on the best OGX shampoos.

In this review I’ve looked in detail at the ingredients inside the shampoo, what sets it apart from other Argan oil shampoos on the market, and which hair type the product is best suited to. I’ve also listed all the pros and cons I found when using this shampoo for over a month.

This post is my full review of the OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo

What is Argan Oil?

Argan oil comes from the kernels of Argan trees. Argan trees are native to Morocco and the oil is used in cooking as well as for cosmetic purposes. It is usually a yellow colour and has a nutty flavour.

Argan oil has become so popular as an ingredient in beauty products that the Moroccan government has increased the cultivation of Argan trees. Its benefits to the skin and hair may be due to its high content of fatty acids and anti-oxidants.

As well as protecting the skin and hair, Argan oil may also have benefits for diabetes, and heart health. It has been referred to as “liquid gold” due to its many uses and benefits.

Benefits of Argan Oil for Hair

If you regularly dye your hair, Argan oil can help to protect and amplify the colour. In one study from 2013, Argan oil was shown to reduce damage to the hair strands from the colouring process, as well as enhance shine and strength.

Argan oil can also help to improve scalp health. The oil is rich in fatty acids and vitamin E which help to moisturise and soothe the skin. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxdiant properties which may help to reduce the symptoms of scalp conditions like dandruff.

Since Argan oil contains high amounts of vitamin E, it may help to reduce hair loss. A 2010 study showed that supplementing with vitamin E lead to less hair fall in volunteers who suffered from hair thinning. This may be due to the anti-oxidant activity of vitamin E, which reduces the oxidative stress on the scalp associated with alopecia.

I couldn’t find any studies looking at whether a vitamin E rich oil like Argan oil would reduce hair loss if it’s applied directly to the scalp, however other studies have shown that natural ingredients which reduce inflammation on the hair follicle lead to less shedding.

How to Use the Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo

To use the OGX Argan Oil of Morocco shampoo, apply a generous amount to soaking wet hair and massage it into the hair and scalp. Once the shampoo has formed a lather, rinse is out thoroughly and apply the OGX Argan Oil conditioner.

When the shampoo comes out of the bottle it has a yellow colour, and a thicker consistency compared to the other OGX shampoos I’ve tested (shown in the photograph below). It has a strong woody scent which leaves the hair slightly perfumed. Out of all the OGX shampoos I’ve tested, this one has the best fragrance in my opinion.

The conditioner also has a yellow colour and a thick consistency. If you have longer hair, make sure you apply the conditioner right through to the ends of your hair as it does a great job at smoothing frayed or split ends.

After using this shampoo regularly for a month I found this was the best OGX shampoo for making my hair shiny and glossy. It does a great job at reducing frizz and leaving you with silky hair.

My current favourite OGX shampoo is the OGX Liquid Pearl shampoo, and compared with that it wasn’t quite as good at smoothing frizz, but it did do a better job at enhancing shine.

If you have dry hair like I do, I would advise not to use this shampoo every day. For me it was a bit too drying for every day use. If you have an oily scalp however, this may be your new best friend.

The cleansing agent in the shampoo is Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate which is more gentle than SLS or SLES, but may still be a bit harsh for very dry hair types.

I found the OGX Argan Oil conditioner to be much more moisturising and nourishing than the shampoo, but I still enjoyed using the shampoo because of the great smell.

Pros and Cons of the OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo

Overall, I would recommend this shampoo for frizzy hair or dull tresses that need to be revived. It leaves the hair with a radiant shine, strengthens brittle strands, and improves hair texture. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone with extremely dry hair or a dry, flaky scalp. This is because I think the cleanser in this shampoo is still quite harsh.

Pros

  • Improves shine – the shampoo leaves the hair extremely glossy and shiny.
  • Adds moisture – the Argan oil in the formula is excellent for sealing moisture into the hair strands.
  • Pleasant scent – it has a lovely woody perfume which is the best scent out of all OGX shampoos in my opinion.
  • Reduces breakage – this shampoo increases hair elasticity and strengthens the hair strands.
  • Soothes the scalp – since Argan oil is a natural source of vitamin E it may help to improve scalp health.

Cons

  • May be too drying for some – although Argan oil is very moisturising, the cleansing agent in this shampoo may be too harsh for certain hair types.
  • Doesn’t lather well – since the shampoo is sulphate free it doesn’t lather well in the shower.
  • Not cruelty free – unfortunately OGX is still not cruelty free since the brand sells products in mainland China where animal testing is required by law.
  • Not suitable for very greasy hair – if you have very greasy hair you may find that the cleansing agent is not harsh enough for you. You may be better off with a shampoo containing sulfates.

What sets the OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo Apart from its Competitors?

When researching to see how the OGX Argan Oil shampoo compares with its competitors, I found that many of the major high street brands made hair care products containing Argan oil.

The most popular Argan oil shampoos I could find, based on online reviews, were:

  1. HASK Argan oil shampoo
  2. Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo
  3. Herbal Essences Argan oil shampoo
  4. Garnier Ultimate Blends Argan Oil & Almond Cream Shampoo
  5. Sheamoisture Argan Oil & Almond Milk Smooth & Tame Shampoo
  6. Dr Organic Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo

Out of these six shampoos the two most popular products were the HASK Argan Oil Shampoo and the Herbal Essences Argan Oil shampoo. I compared these two with the OGX shampoo to see which was best. The comparison table below shows an overview of the three shampoos.

From the comparison table above we can see that both the Herbal Essences and HASK shampoos are cruelty free whereas the OGX shampoo is not. If OGX ever become cruelty free in the future I will update this post.

If you have extremely greasy hair and want to try an Argan oil shampoo I would recommend the Herbal Essences product over the other two. This is because it contains sulfates, lathers better in the shower, and does a better job at cleaning oil from the hair compared with the other two shampoos.

Also, after reading customer reviews across the Internet, it would seem that the Herbal Essences shampoo is better suited to oily hair than dry hair.

All three shampoos have a strong Argan oil scent, and all of them left my hair slightly perfumed. They all did a good job at leaving my hair shiny and smooth. Personally my favourite out of the three was the HASK shampoo. Even though it uses the same cleansing agent as the OGX shampoo, I found that it didn’t dry my hair out as much and was better at reducing frizz.

HASK Argan Oil Shampoo

If cost is an issue, the Herbal Essences Argan oil shampoo was the least expensive in the supermarket. The prices above are their current cost on Amazon however you need to take into account the quantity. When you look at the amount in the bottle and the price it worked out that the Herbal Essences shampoo was the best value.

All three shampoos are designed for damaged hair, and from my experience leave tresses clean and glossy. They are all also suitable for the whole family.

How I Test Out Products to Review

When I’m testing out a new shampoo I always use the product for at least a month before I write my review. This gives me enough time to test out the product thoroughly.

I also stop using any other products on my hair that could alter the way the shampoo works or the effect it has. My video reviews are always filmed after I have washed my hair with the shampoo with no other product on my hair.

I am aware when I test shampoo products that I have dry, fine and naturally curly hair, and I try to consider how the shampoo might perform on other hair types. In my reviews I give my own opinion of the product but also research other opinions across the internet, as well as discuss the product with my friends.

I am always interested to hear the opinions of my readers on any shampoos I have reviewed on my website, so there is a comment section at the end of each review for this purpose. I hope my reviews are helpful to others but if you have feedback on how I can make them better please let me know.
