Does OGX shampoo cause dandruff? The short answer is no. Dandruff is not caused by shampoo, but by a naturally occurring fungus called Malassezia.
Although OGX shampoo doesn’t cause dandruff however, if the formula is too harsh for you, it could be drying out your scalp. A dry scalp is not the same as dandruff but has very similar symptoms.
This post will help you to identify if you have dandruff or a dry scalp, and whether on not you should stop using your OGX shampoo.
Does OGX Shampoo Cause Dandruff?
Although OGX shampoos won’t cause dandruff, if you already suffer from dandruff, it’s possible it could make your symptoms appear worse.
If you’re not using a medicated shampoo, flakes could build up on your scalp over time. It may then seem as if your shampoo has made your dandruff worse, when in fact it’s just that you’re using the wrong product.
If you have never had dandruff before and suddenly develop it, this could be due to age or environmental conditions, but won’t be the fault of your shampoo.
Dandruff can develop at any age, and be caused by certain illnesses or sensitivities. Men are also more likely to develop dandruff than women.
Is OGX Shampoo Good for Dandruff?
Although OGX don’t make a specific shampoo designed to treat dandruff, the OGX Tea Tree Mint Shampoo contains tea tree oil which has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
Tea tree oil has actually been shown in clinical trials to improve the symptoms of dandruff, and make the scalp less oily and itchy. Tea tree oil is often added to hair treatments as a natural solution for treating dandruff.
Before trying out the OGX Tea Tree Mint Shampoo however, you should first ensure that you actually have dandruff in the first place, rather than a dry scalp.
Dandruff Vs Dry Scalp
A dry scalp has similar symptoms to dandruff such as itching, irritated skin and flakes, but they are two different conditions.
Dandruff – Dandruff is caused by seborrheic dermatitis, which makes the skin scaly, oily and red. With dandruff there is a combination of too much oil and an overgrowth of yeast (called Malassezia) which leads to scalp irritation and flaking.
Dry Scalp – A dry scalp could be caused by stress, eczema, harsh shampoos, the weather, dry air or contact dermatitis. It leads to irritation, itching and flaking.
If you are suffering from a dry scalp, this may be caused by an OGX shampoo, if the ingredients are too harsh for you.
The table below will help you to determine whether you have dandruff or a dry scalp.
Symptom | Dry Scalp | Dandruff |
---|---|---|
Itchy scalp | ✓ | ✓ |
Oily, large yellow or white flakes | ✓ | |
Small dry flakes | ✓ | |
Dry skin on other parts of your body | ✓ | |
Oily, red, scaly skin | ✓ |
If you’re suffering from a dry scalp this could be remedied by massaging the OGX Damage Remedy+ Coconut Miracle Oil into your scalp 2-3 times per week.
Can Certain Shampoos Give You Dandruff?
As mentioned before, your shampoo won’t give you dandruff, but using the wrong shampoo could make your symptoms appear worse. The wrong shampoo could irritate the scalp and lead to increased itching and flaking.
Not shampooing your hair enough could also lead to a build up of dead skin cells on the scalp, and more flakes.
Although shampoos won’t give you dandruff, certain shampoos could give you a dry scalp. If you have dry patches on other parts of your body, it may be your symptoms are caused by dryness rather than dandruff. If this is the case you may want to consider using hair oils to help moisturise the scalp.
OGX shampoos are very gentle, but if you have particularly sensitive skin you may wish to try a milder shampoo, such as a baby shampoo, to see if your symptoms ease.
Is OGX Good for an Itchy Scalp?
Whether or not OGX is good for an itchy scalp will depend on the cause of the itching in the first place!
If the itching if caused by dryness or irritation, the OGX Tea Tree Mint Shampoo may be able to help. This shampoo is my top choice for an itchy scalp since it’s extremely cooling and refreshing. It also contains peppermint oil and tea tree oil which both have anti-inflammatory properties.
If your scalp is itchy however due to a build up of oil, it may be that the cleansing agents in OGX shampoos are not harsh enough to clean your scalp properly. In this case you would be better off using a different shampoo that contained sulfates to help remove the excess oil and grease from the scalp.
OGX shampoos are free from Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), which means they are more gentle and less likely to dry out your hair. At the same time however they won’t clean the hair and scalp as well as shampoos with sulfate, which may lead to itching caused by a build up of dead skin cells and oil.
