The OGX Liquid Pearl Shampoo has become one of my favourite OGX shampoos since it’s so good at reducing frizz. On this website I aim to I test out, review and compare all OGX products. This is my review of the OGX Liquid Pearl Shampoo and the matching conditioner.
OGX are well known for making sulfate free shampoos that contain exotic ingredients. I try to test out every shampoo that OGX make. You can view all my OGX shampoo reviews in my post on the best OGX shampoo for every hair type. I found that the OGX Liquid Pearl Shampoo was the best for creating glossy hair and smooth strands.
The key ingredients in this shampoo are luxurious pearl extract and nutrient rich sea kelp. In this review I have analysed all the ingredients, demonstrated how to use the product, and provided photographs of what it looks like out of the bottle. I also give my opinion on how this shampoo and conditioner performs with all my pros and cons.

What is Liquid Pearl?
The OGX Liquid Pearl shampoo contains hydrolyzed pearl. Hydrolyzed pearl is a water-soluble form of pearl powder that is easily absorbed into the hair and skin.
Hydrolyzed pearl is made up of aragonite, which is the mineral normally found in pearls, and conchiolin which is a protein secreted by mollusks. Since pearl comes from mollusks (usually oysters), the OGX Liquid Pearl shampoo is not vegan.
Pearl is made up of protein, calcium, and over thirty different trace minerals. It is not a new ingredients to beauty products. Pearl has been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years in remedies to help beautify the hair and skin.
What Does Liquid Pearl do for Your Hair?
Pearl powder contains amino acids which stimulate the skin to produce collagen. One study showed that nacre (also known as mother of pearl) helps to stimulate collagen production. This can help to strengthen the hair follicle and promote a healthy scalp.
Pearl also contains high amounts of magnesium and potassium which help to protect the hair from environmental stressors and keep the scalp hydrated.
Further studies are needed to determine the effect of pearl on the hair, however it has been found to be a useful ingredient for treating various skin conditions and accelerating wound healing. It may therefore be useful in creating a healthy scalp environment for hair growth.
How the OGX Liquid Pearl Shampoo is Used
Apply a generous amount of the OGX Liquid Pearl shampoo to wet hair. Massage into the hair and scalp until the shampoo forms a lather. Rinse thoroughly and then follow with the OGX Liquid Pearl Conditioner.
You can see from the photograph below that the shampoo is completely clear and has a gel-like consistency. This shampoo has one of the best fragrances, in my opinion, of all OGX shampoos. It also leaves the hair slightly scented.
When I first used this shampoo I found that it didn’t lather well. I wasn’t surprised by this since the product doesn’t contain sulfates, and I’ve found most OGX shampoos don’t lather well (apart from the OGX Tea Tree and Mint shampoo which did form a good lather despite being sulfate free!)
I was really surprised when I first started using the Liquid Pearl shampoo because my hair was so smooth and glossy afterwards. It did a far better job at reducing frizz than any other OGX shampoo I’ve tried.
The OGX Liquid Pearl conditioner (pictured below) has a very slight pink tint and a thick texture. I found it did a good job at detangling my hair and adding shine and hydration. My hair was left more manageable and shiny afterwards.
This shampoo very quickly became my favourite OGX shampoo because my hair was so amazingly shiny and glossy after using it. I tested the product out for a month before writing this review and found that the shampoo continued to perform well the whole time. I was actually disappointed when I had to stop using it to test out a different product.
If you have unruly or frizzy hair I think this shampoo and conditioner is definitely worth a try! Since it has become one of my favourites I’m now trying out other products from the OGX Liquid Pearl collection including the OGX Smoothing Liquid Pearl Luminescent Serum.
Pros and Cons of the OGX Liquid Pearl Shampoo
I recommend this shampoo for unruly, unmanageable and frizzy hair. It does a great job at leaving the hair smooth, glossy, and easy to brush. I personally find most OGX shampoos a little by too drying but then my hair gets dry very easily.
For this reason I don’t use this shampoo every day. If you have dry hair like me I would recommend either using this product every other day, or if you want to wash your hair every day, using a more gentle cleanser on the days in between.
Pros
- Leaves hair feeling glossy and smooth
- Reduces frizz
- Pleasant scent
- Hydrates the scalp
- Pearl extract contains anti-oxidants which protect the hair from the environment
- Sea kelp nourishes the hair and promotes growth
Cons
- It’s not vegan since pearl comes from mollusks
- OGX is currently not cruelty free
- Doesn’t lather very well
- Not suitable for a very oily scalp
- May be too drying if you use it every day
- Some other reviews claim the shampoo smells like glue (although this was not my experience!)
OGX Liquid Pearl Shampoo Ingredients
The two key ingredients in the OGX Liquid Pearl shampoo are pearl extract and sea kelp. I love that they both come from the sea – to help bring out your inner mermaid!
We have already looked at the benefits of pearl powder for the hair, but what about sea kelp?
Sea Kelp Benefits for the Hair
It is believed that sea kelp can help with hair growth but there are no clinical studies that support this claim. The association between sea kelp and hair growth may be because of it’s iodine content and the links between iodine and thyroid function.
Iodine deficiency can lead to poor thyroid function, and a symptom of poor thyroid function is hair thinning. Since sea kelp is one of the best natural sources of iodine, it may cause hair growth in patients with thyroid disorders due to iodine deficiency.
Sea kelp also contains many minerals and vitamins which can help to strengthen the hair and reduce breakage. These minerals and vitamins also help to nourish the scalp and create a healthy environment for hair growth.
Full Ingredients
OGX sometimes change their formulas, and also may use different formulations in different countries. For this reason you should check the ingredients label on the bottle.
Currently the full ingredients in the OGX Smooth & Shine Enhance+ Liquid Pearl Shampoo are as follows:

What Sets the OGX Liquid Pearl Shampoo Apart from its Competitors?
When reviewing products I always consider what makes the product stand out from its main competitors. Interestingly, I found that there were no other major drugstore brands that produced a shampoo containing pearl extract. I did however find other high street brands that made popular shampoos with sea kelp. The combination of both sea kelp and pearl extract is currently unique to OGX however.
The most popular drugstore shampoo I could find containing sea kelp was the Jason Grapeseed Oil and Sea Kelp Shampoo. I’ve done a quick comparison between this shampoo and the OGX Liquid Pearl Shampoo. The comparison table below shows the basic differences.

At the end of the day I couldn’t find a shampoo that compared to the OGX Liquid Pearl shampoo in terms of its ingredients. If, however you want to try a good shampoo with sea kelp and it’s important to you that it’s vegan and cruelty free, the Jason Sea Kelp shampoo is a good alternative. The OGX Liquid Pearl shampoo is not cruelty free, and due to containing pearl, it is not vegan.
Like the OGX Liquid Pearl shampoo, the Jason Sea Kelp shampoo is sulphate free and gentle on the hair. Even though it’s a bit more expensive, it works out as slightly better value since it comes in a bigger bottle. I’ve tried many Jason shampoos and love their range. I find they are really gentle and hydrating for dry hair.
The OGX Liquid Pearl shampoo is my favourite out of the two, but I think the Jason shampoo would be a good alternative for vegans.

HOW I TEST OUT PRODUCTS TO REVIEW
When I’m testing out a new shampoo I always use the product for at least a month before I write my review. This gives me enough time to test out the product thoroughly.
I also stop using any other products on my hair that could alter the way the shampoo works or the effect it has. My video reviews are always filmed after I have washed my hair with the shampoo with no other product on my hair.
I am aware when I test shampoo products that I have dry, fine and naturally curly hair, and I try to consider how the shampoo might perform on other hair types. In my reviews I give my own opinion of the product but also research other opinions across the internet, as well as discuss the product with my friends.
I am always interested to hear the opinions of my readers on any shampoos I have reviewed on my website, so there is a comment section at the end of each review for this purpose. I hope my reviews are helpful to others but if you have feedback on how I can make them better please let me know.
