What is Gel?
Gel is a hairstyling product that is used to form a cast around the hair and hold it in a particular style. With curly hair, having a a gel layer over the curls can help to maintain curl formation and prevent the hair becoming frizzy.
Gel can be applied to the hair either when it’s damp or dry, and helps to hold the hairstyle in place for longer periods of time.
Getting the right gel for your hair type is important however. A good gel will clump curls together and give them definition. The wrong gel can lead to dryness or buildup on the hair.
Tips on Finding the Right Gel for You
The right gel will depend on the hair’s texture and porosity level. Low porosity hair types should choose lighter gels that are less likely to lead to product build up. For high porosity hair, you’ll want a moisturising gel that forms a seal on the hair shaft.
If you’re not sure what your hair porosity level is, take my quiz to find out!
You should also check to see if the gel contains drying alcohols. Short-chained alcohols like propyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, denatured alcohol, and ethanol are all drying on the hair. These ingredients are often found in gels to get the product to dry quickly on the hair, but it can end up drying out your hair strands and leaving them frizzy.
The gels chosen in this post are all free from drying alcohols! They are also all approved for the Curly Girl Method!

How to Apply Gel on Curly Hair
It’s important to note that gel can sometimes leave your hair feeling crunchy. This is because some gels use thickeners and polymers as their “glue” to hold the cast of the gel in place on your hair. Using too much of these types of gels can result in a sticky or stiff hair texture.
The best way to use gel on your hair is to apply it when your hair is damp and then scrunch the product into your curls. This will help you avoid crunchy, sticky locks and lead to well-defined curls instead!
FAQs about Gels for Curly Black Hair
What gel is good for natural curly hair?
Two great gels for natural curly hair are the ECO Styler Olive Oil Styling Gel and the ECO Styler Black Castor & Flax Seed Oil Styling Gel.
The Eco Styler Gel with olive oil helps to reduce frizz and moisturise the hair. It’s great for especially dry or frizzy hair, and also helps to regulate oil production in the scalp.
The ECO Styler Black Castor & Flax Seed Oil Styling Gel helps to nourish and repair the hair, and promote growth. It contains wheat protein which strengthens and protects the hair. This is a great choice for natural curly hair that’s damaged.
Is gel bad for natural black hair?
If you are using gels that contain drying alcohols, it could damage the hair over time. Using hair gel too often to pull back the hair tightly could also end up with your hair becoming thin and falling out.
If you only use good gels that are infused with moisturising ingredients, gel can actually help to keep the hair in good condition. The gels in this post are all moisturising and free from drying ingredients.
Is hair gel good for curls?
A good hair gel can help to define curls and improve the texture and condition of the hair. Gels also prevent frizz and enhance curl formation. The important thing is to choose a good gel that only contains moisturising ingredients and no drying alcohols.
