What is a Blow Dry Brush?
A blow dry brush is a brush with a hair dryer built in. They can be used to style and dry your hair at the same time. Blow dry brushes have become popular due to their effectiveness at achieving fuller and less frizzy hair. They are also convenient for detangling the hair and creating different hairstyles.
Blow dry brushes usually blow heat from inside the brush allowing you to twirl and style it at the same time. They are available in a variety of different shapes including flat, round and oval. The different shapes help to create different hairstyles and looks. They also come with either rotating or stationary barrels.
Benefits of a Blow Dry Brush
The benefits of using a blow dry brush instead of a regular brush include:
- Easier to style the hair
- Creates curls or straight hair without much effort
- Leaves the hair smoother and with less frizz
- It’s quicker that drying the hair with a regular hair dryer
- Makes the hair appear fuller with more volume
- Adds lift to the roots
- Helps to detangle the hair painlessly
- Easier to hold than both a hairbrush and hair dryer
Types of Blow Dry Brush
There are different blow dry brushes on the market depending on your hair type and what hair style you want to create.
Stationary Hot Air Brushes
These brushes do not move and give you full control over how your hair is styled. If you have very fine and brittle hair, having a stationary brush may reduce breakage or tangles.
Most blow dry brushes are stationary and are usually less expensive that rotating ones. Although they give you more control, you also need to do more work to style the hair than with rotating brushes which make styling easier.
Rotating Hot Air Brushes
Having a blow dry brush with a rotating head helps to boost volume in the hair and add lift at the roots. They are good for creating curls in the hair and dry the hair faster than a stationary brush.
These brushes tend to be slightly more expensive and have a greater risk of creating tangles, however if you have fine hair, they are excellent for adding volume. They can be used to help curl the hair under or enhance your natural wave pattern.
Round Brushes
Round brushes are good for adding volume to the hair. They help to add movement and fullness and make the hair appear bigger. They are also useful if you like to style your hair curled up or curled under.
Round brushes are best if you want to create a wavy or curly hair style. Most blow dry brushes come in an oval shape which is better for adding volume, but round brush attachments can be used to better shape your curls.
Oval Brushes
Oval brushes create more volume in the hair than any other shape. They are perfect for creating extra lift at the roots and curling the ends. Oval shaped brushes are my top choice if you want to create fullness and body in fine hair.
You will find that most hot air brushes come in an oval design since this shape is best for volume. Many of them have extra round or flat attachments if you want to then curl or straighten your hair.
Flat Brushes
Flat brushes are designed to smooth the hair and minimise volume. They are good if you like your hair to be straight. They reduce frizz and leave the hair sleek and glossy.
Flat brushes are your best option if you only want to create straight hair styles. They are not good for waves or curls but excellent at making frizz free, smooth hair.
Which Blow Dry Brush is Best for Fine Hair?
The shape of the blow dry brush you choose with depend on the hair style you want to create. In general blow dry brushes with firm bristles that are stiff enough to detangle, but gentle enough not to tear or pull the hair, are best for fine strands.
I have listed the best blow dry brushes available for fine hair types broken down by stationary brushes and rotating ones. The flat brushes are listed under stationary blow dry brushes.
Best Stationary Blow Dry Brushes for Fine Hair
Revlon Salon One- Step Volumizer
- Shape: Oval
- Heat Settings: 3
The Revlon Salon One-Step Volumizer is an oval shaped stationary blow dry brush. It’s the perfect style and shape for creating volume at the roots and beautifully curled ends.
This blow dry brush evenly distributes hot air to style the hair faster and cause less heat damage. It uses ionic technology to leave the hair smooth and frizz free. The mixed bristles are made from nylon and have ball tips to gently detangle fine hair.
This hairdryer brush features three different heat settings, two speeds, a cool tip and tangle free swivel cord. This is my top pick for creating volume in fine hair.
- A 2-in-1 styling tool that gives the power of a dryer and a volume of a styler

KIPOZI Hot Air Brush Dryer
- Shape: Oval
- Heat Settings: 3
The KIPOZI Hot Air Brush Dryer is very similar to the Revlon model but is slightly less expensive. Like the Revlon design it has an oval shape with 360° air vents. It also has Nylon pin and tufted bristles with ball tips to detangle the hair and add volume.
This blow dry brush creates voluminous, frizz free hair. It is a four in one device which replaces your hairdryer, brush, straightener and curling tongs. It’s best to use on damp rather than wet hair and effectively dries and styles the hair leaving it glossy and sleek.
When comparing this brush to the Revlon design there’s not much in it other than the price. If you are looking for a good oval shaped dryer brush this one is the most affordable and achieves salon quality results. It can be used on both long hair and short hair.

Remington Volume and Curl Air Styler, Ionic Hair Dryer Brush
- Shape: Oval and Round
- Heat Settings: 2
The Remington Volume and Curl Air Styler gives you more options than the KIPOZI and Revlon models. It comes with four different attachments: a 50mm oval brush head, a 21mm mixed bristle round brush, a 30mm retractable bristle round brush and a concentrator.
The different attachment heads are easy to use as you simply click them on and off. It you have curly hair and want to enhance your curls, the smaller brushes allow you to create small and ideally formed curls. The 30mm thermal brush with retractable bristles is perfect if you want to create wavy hair.
This device is anti static and helps to reduce frizz. It also has the option of a cool shot to lock in your style. The burst of cool air helps to seal the hair cuticle and stop fine hair becoming unruly. If you want a blow dry brush that will allow you to create various different hairstyles, this would be my top pick.

Aibesser Hair Dryer Brush
- Shape: Oval
- Heat Settings: 2
The Aibesser Hair Dryer brush is another oval shaped design. Like the other brushes it’s a hairdryer, hair comb, hair straightener, and hair curler combined. Compared with other blow dry brushes the Aibesser design has a wider air outlet which makes drying faster.
This brush is my top pick if you want a brush that can dry hair fast. The nylon bristles are widely distributed to prevent tangles and the wide vents ensure the hair dries quickly. If you normally use a flat iron, this brush can also be used to straighten the hair and reduce static and frizz.
It is good for creating waves and large curls in the hair but not suitable for tighter curls. This brush is excellent at adding volume to fine hair and making it appear thicker. The temperature settings include a cool wind and hot wind to add hair texture and lock in your style.

REVLON Pro Collection Salon One Step Hair Dryer and Styler
- Shape: Flat
- Heat Settings: 2 plus cool shot
The REVLON Pro Collection Salon One Step Hair Dryer and Styler is a great hair tool if you have fine hair that you style straight. It adds more body to the hair than a hair straightener and dries and smoothes the hair in half the time of a hair dryer.
The paddle brush contains flexible bristles with massaging ball tips to smooth and detangle the hair. It also has a tangle free swivel cord to make styling easier. This blow dry brush is better for medium to long hair. Negative ions saturate the airflow to reduce drying time and minimise frizz.
Revlon is one of the most popular brands for blow dry brushes. In comparison with Revlon’s Salon One-Step Volumizer, this tool is the best for achieving smooth and sleek hair, whereas the volumizer is better for waves, curls and volume.
- A 2-in-1 styling tool that gives the power of a dryer and precision of a styler
- Glides through your hair to detangle, dry and smooth in half the time*. Even blow-drying the back of...

Belifu Ionic Hair Straightener Brush
- Shape: Flat
- Heat Settings: multiple temperature settings on a LED screen ranging between 150°C (300°F) to 230°C (450°F)
If your goal is to achieve straight hair, the Belifu Ionic Hair Straightener Brush is my top pick. Instead of bristles it has small heated panels made from ceramic. The tiny stones supply even heat distribution across the hair preventing damaging and leaving hair smooth and straight.
The multiple temperature setting means you can choose just the right heat for your hair. This makes this brush good not only for fine locks but also for thick hair or naturally curly hair. It is one of the best brushes for smoothing the hair and reducing frizz.
This brush has a swivel cord for ease of use and safety features such as an automatic shut off after 30 minutes. It is best suited to longer hair types and can help add volume and bounce to flat hair.

MiroPure Hair Straightening Brush
- Shape: Flat
- Heat Settings: multiple temperature settings on a LED screen ranging between 150°C (300°F) to 230°C (450°F)
The MiroPure Hair Straightening Brush is similar to the Belifu design but comes with a good heat resistant glove and carry bag. The automatic shut off feature on this brush is after 60 minutes whereas the Belifu design is 30 minutes, and this design takes 1 minute to heat up whereas the Belifu design takes 30 seconds to heat up.
Other than those slight differences the two models are similar. The MicroPure device has a high density nano comb brush to straighten all hair types including wavy and fine hair. It also has a swivel cord and an anti scald design so it won’t burn your scalp.
This brush can reach a high temperature so is also suitable to thick and coarse hair. It saves you the time of blow drying and ensures every day is a good hair day! The only reason I might pick this design over the Belifu model is it feels slightly better quality and is slightly easier to hold

Best Rotating Blow Dry Brushes for Fine Hair
Dyson Airwrap
- Shape: Flat, Round and Oval
- Heat Settings: Temperature always stays below 150°C
The Dyson Airwrap is my most expensive pick however it is not just a blow dry brush. It comes with a number of different barrels and brushes to curl, wave, smooth and volumise the hair. It also includes attachments for different hair types and lengths.
Although the barrel of the brush itself doesn’t rotate, the Dyson Airwrap uses an aerodynamic phenomenon called the Coanda effect which curves air to attract and wrap the hair to the barrel. Since the hair is attracted to the barrel you don’t need gloves, or to wind and twist the tool yourself.
The Airwrap regulates heat to ensure it’s always below 150°C and doesn’t cause damage to the hair. It comes with three firm smoothing brushes that use the Coanda effect to attract hair to the brush, and propel air along the hair strands to mimic a hairdresser’s blow-dry technique.
The smoothing brushes can be used to create a straighter hairstyle with fewer flyaway strands. The firm bristles are perfect for fine hair which has become unruly or frizzy.
- Accessories included: 2 x 30mm Airwrap barrels, 2 x 40mm Airwrap barrels, Firm smoothing brush,...
- Powered by the Dyson digital motor V9: Its 13-blade impeller spins at up to 110,000rpm, generating...

BaByliss 2777U Big Hair Rotating Styler
- Shape: Oval
- Heat Settings: 2 plus cool shot
The BaByliss 2777U Big Hair Rotating Styler is my favorite hot air brush for achieving volume in fine hair. This multi-directional spinning brush as two rotation speeds and moves both clockwise and counter-clockwise. It allows you to switch directions as you lift your hair and adds big volume from the roots.
The 42 mm ceramic barrel adds fullness and body to the hair as you dry. It is designed so if the heat setting is high, the brush rotation will be faster and when the heat is low the rotation is slower. The brush is stationary when the brush is set to cool shot.
The ionic technology enhances shine and reduces frizz. The large ceramic rotating barrel has soft bristles and is ideal for smoothing shorter styles, layers and fringes. This is one of the best hot tools for reviving flat, fine and limp hair. The ceramic coating protects the hair from damage and the cool setting locks in your new style.
- Features 42 mm ceramic barrel with soft brush bristles for ultimate volume and shine
- Two heats plus a cool setting. For added lift, hold the brush close to the roots for a few seconds....
- Two rotation speeds for total control. Mixture of soft natural boar and nylon bristles

KeMei Rotating Hair Dryer Brush
- Shape: Oval
- Heat Settings: 3
The KeMei rotating hair dryer comes with two different sized brush heads to help you create waves or curls without a curling iron. Compared with the BaByliss model, this brush can be used to create smaller curls and is better for very short hair. The different sizes allow you to change your hairstyle and can be used to add volume and texture to the hair.
The brush has buttons allowing you to rotate the brush head either right or left, and the soft nylon bristles detangle the hair whilst removing static and adding volume. You can use this brush instead of your curling iron and can place it at the roots for more lift on fine hair.
It’s compact and easy to carry and has a wind tunnel that evenly distributes heat. The comb head rotates automatically to create natural curls. It’s slightly more expensive than the BaByliss design but I would recommend this one if you want to create tighter curls or if you have very short fine hair.

Heat Guide for Using a Blow Dry Brush on Fine Hair
If you have fine hair you should not set your blow dry brush to a high temperature. High temperatures and high wind speeds are useful for long thick hair but not suitable for thin hair.
Start by styling your hair with a medium temperature on a low wind speed. This produces the best results for fine hair. Once your hair is styled finish off with a low temperature or cold blast on a high wind speed to lock the hairstyle in place.
Styling Tips for Using a Blow Dry Brush on Fine Hair
- Always use a heat protectant before using your blow dry brush
- Use hot brushes on damp hair rather than wet
- Regularly clean the brush bristles to ensure your get the best results from your dryer brush
- Use the ball tips to massage the scalp and increase blood flow to the hair follicles
- Finish off with a blast of cool air to lock in your hairstyle
