Liquid Biotin for Hair Growth – Does it Work?

Biotin supplements have a reputation for increasing hair growth, and promoting healthy skin and strong nails. I began researching the benefits of liquid biotin for hair growth after my own hair became thin a few years ago.

In this post I go through all the benefits of liquid biotin for the hair, as well as my own experience of taking biotin to reverse hair thinning.

Liquid biotin for hair growth

Biotin is also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H. It is found in egg yolk, nuts, bananas and mushrooms. Biotin deficiencies are rare, however it is believed that taking additional biotin can help increase both hair and nail growth.

I found one study which showed that 18 patients with poor hair and nails, saw an improvement in growth after taking biotin supplements. The study only however, included patients who had brittle nails and thinning hair. It is unclear whether similar results would have been seen in patients who already had healthy hair and nails.

If you have noticed that your nails and hair are in bad condition, it’s possible a good biotin supplement could help. In this post I will show you my results as well as which liquid supplements I recommend.

What is Liquid Biotin?

Liquid biotin is a biotin supplement that comes in the form of a liquid instead of a tablet or capsule. It normally comes in a glass bottle with a dropper, and can be found in a formula on its own, or mixed with other b vitamins.

Liquid biotin is often combined with other vitamins that help to promote healthy skin and hair such as vitamin D, folate, vitamin B12, zinc, copper and keratin.

Many companies claim that supplements in liquid form lead to better absorption in the gut, however there is not much evidence to back up this claim.

Often people prefer to buy liquid supplements rather than tablets or capsules simply because they are more convenient and easier to swallow.

5 Benefits of Biotin for Hair

Taking biotin supplements regularly can help to promote healthy hair growth, and give you stronger nails. The main five benefits of biotin for hair include:

1) Improves Hair Quality

Biotin can help the hair to appear shinier and stronger. It improves the strength and texture of the hair and gives it a fuller and thicker appearance. Since biotin improves overall hair health, it can leave hair looking glossy, shiny and smooth.

2) Reduces Hair Loss

Taking liquid biotin can be an effective way to reduce hair loss, improve existing regrowth and prevent further breakage.

One study conducted in 2015 showed that women with thinning hair who took a supplement containing biotin along with marine protein and other ingredients, saw an increase in hair growth. Another similar study conducted in 2012 had the same results.

If you are trying to grow long hair, taking a high quality biotin supplement can help you retain your hair strands for longer.

3) Prevents Premature Greying

It’s possible that supplementing with Biotin can help to reduce the appearance of grey hairs. One study found that deficiencies in biotin, vitamin B12 and folic acid were associated with premature greying.

Adding dietary supplements containing biotin to your daily routine may prevent your hair from going grey early, however this has only been shown to work in cases where there was already a biotin deficiency.

4) Strengthens the Hair

Biotin stimulates keratin production in hair. This makes each hair strand stronger, more resilient, and less likely to become brittle or break. As well as promoting stronger hair, biotin also improves nail health and helps to keep nails strong and hard.

5) Thickens the Hair

Biotin increases the rate of follicle growth which helps the hair to become thicker and fuller. Biotin is often found in hair treatments which claim to promote thicker hair and reduced hair loss. There is little evidence that this works in healthy individuals, but if you have a biotin deficiency you may see good results.

My Experience of Taking Liquid Biotin

As well as being a beauty blogger I’m also a Registered Nurse. In 2020 at the start of the pandemic I went to work in an Intensive Care Unit to look after COVID positive patients. It was after three months of working in Intensive Care that I noticed my hair had started to become extremely thin and was falling out in chunks.

I’m unsure of the exact cause of my hair loss but I started researching ways that I might be able to help my hair to grow back. I had heard that biotin might help hair to regrow so I decided to try taking liquid biotin for 3 months, and took before and after photographs of my scalp.

How to Use Liquid Biotin for Hair Growth

The liquid biotin that I took was the Horbäach Liquid Biotin Drops 10000mcg. I took one dropperful every day and took photographs of the top of my head before I started taking the supplement, and again after 3 months. The liquid is supposed to be taken orally rather than applied to the scalp.

Liquid Biotin Before and After Photos

The photographs below show the top of my head before I started taking liquid biotin, and again three months later.

After

I personally felt that taking liquid biotin didn’t help my hair to grow but I did notice that my hair was falling out less frequently. I also noticed that my hair and nails were much stronger. If you are suffering from hair loss, I think it’s definitely worth trying as it does help to fortify the hair, but in my case it didn’t help my lost hair to regrow.

The Liquid Biotin that I took

If you want to try out the same liquid biotin that I took, I have listed the pros and cons below as well as some alternatives. Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin meaning the body doesn’t store it, so even if you are getting enough biotin from your diet, there’s no harm in increasing your biotin intake.

What sets Horbäach Liquid Biotin Drops Apart from its Competitors?

I found a number of other similar liquid biotin supplements when I was choosing which one to take. They all had a berry flavour and a similar formula. Some of them contained additional B vitamins or vitamin D.

The main reason why I chose the Horbäach liquid biotin over its competitors was the price. It was the least expensive, and I couldn’t see how the others were any better.

I ordered my liquid biotin from Amazon however if you would rather order from a different vendor, or try one of the more expensive products, I have listed some other options for you below.
