Goat milk has been used in cosmetics for thousands of years. It is rich in both saturated and unsaturated fat, and can be used to make creamy, gentle and nourishing soaps and hair masks. In this post you will discover all the goat milk benefits for hair and skin, as well as the best goat milk products to buy!
Goat milk is a powerful ingredient in beauty products. It is a natural emollient and rich in vitamins to help moisturise and nourish the skin and hair. The Ancient Egyptians are known to have used goat milk for beauty treatments and it is said that Cleopatra used to soak in a goat’s milk bath to leave her skin glowing.
Today the beauty benefits of goat’s milk have been proven by science. It can be used to help dry skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, or to encourage hair growth and soothe scalp inflammation.
To research information for this post I went to Hackney City Farm to see the goats, learn about the benefits of goat milk, and discover which goat milk products are best for the hair and skin.

Goat Milk Benefits for Hair
Before we look at which goat milk products are the best for healthy hair growth, I have listed eight benefits that goat milk has for the hair.
1. Goat Milk Reduces Hair Loss
Goat’s milk contains both biotin (vitamin b7) and protein which may help to reduce hair loss and stimulate new growth. Goat’s milk can be used directly on the scalp or as part of your dietary intake to prevent hair thinning.

2. Nourishes the Hair Root and Stimulates Growth
Since goat’s milk is rich in vitamins and nutrients it helps to nourish the hair root and encourage healthy growth. Compared with cow’s milk, goat milk has higher levels of vitamin A, vitamin C, magnesium and calcium. Vitamins A and C both help to stimulate collagen production which is an important part of the hair’s structure.
3. Makes Hair Look Shiny and Conditioned
Goat milk can give you bouncy and shiny hair. It contains a much higher amount of fat compared to cow milk and is therefore better for smoothing and conditioning the hair.
4. Goat Milk Makes Hair Easier to Manage and Detangle
Goat’s milk contains both saturated and unsaturated fat which coats each hair strand and makes it softer and easier to manage. If you have long hair that gets easily tangled, goats milk will help you to soften and loosen the knots.
5. Hydrates and Moisturises Hair
The fatty acids in goats milk help to deeply moisturise dry hair and retain its natural oils. When the hair is well hydrated it is less frizzy and appears smoother.
6. Makes Hair Less Likely to Break
The protein in goat milk helps to make the hair strands stronger and less likely to split or break. It also makes the hair more elastic and flexible.
7. Moisturises the Scalp
Goat milk can help to soothe and moisturise a dry scalp. It has a pH level similar to that of healthy skin and is able to prevent itching or flakiness caused by dry skin.
8. Combats Dandruff
Goat milk contains lauric acid which is antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial. This means it can help to combat dandruff and other scalp concerns.

Recipes to Make Your Own Goat Milk Hair Products
Since I decided not to make my own goat milk mask, I’ve found you a couple of good recipes from other beauty bloggers which are listed below. I will continue to update this post regularly and add new recipes that I discover. I may also try making some of my own this year, and will be posting a separate video showing how to make goats milk hair products. In the meantime check out the recipes below.
Goat Milk Benefits for Skin
Now that we’ve looked at the goat milk benefits for the hair, what about the skin? Below I have listed eight benefits of goat milk for the skin, along with some recommended goat milk soaps and creams.
1. Protects the Skin Barrier
Goat milk contains fatty acids that help to repair the skin barrier, as well as probiotics which encourage the growth of normal skin flora. It also contains selenium which is a mineral shown to support a healthy skin membrane. Maintaining a healthy skin microbiome improves its barrier against pathogens in the environment.
2. Deeply Nourishes the Skin
Goat’s milk is rich in fatty acids and vitamins that nourish the skin. It is a source of vitamin b6 which is believed to be essential for skin development and maintenance. It also contains vitamin d and vitamin a which help to protect the skin from premature ageing.
3. Gently Exfoliates Dead Skin Cells
Goat milk contains alpha-hydroxy acids such as lactic acid which help to gently exfoliate and smooth the skin. The vitamin A in goat milk also helps to shed dead skin cells and leave the skin fresher and more rejuvenated.
4. Helps to Prevent Acne
The high levels of vitamin a, lactic acid and caprylic acid in goat’s milk help with skin problems such as acne. Vitamin A and lactic acid help to clear out the pores of excess oil or dirt stopping blemishes from forming. Caprylic acid has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties so can help combat the bacteria that causes acne.
5. Improves Dry Skin Conditions
Goat milk is excellent for treating dry skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema. It contains both vitamin b2 and vitamin d which help with oil secretion and prevent dryness. The high amount of fat molecules in goat milk also helps to protect the skin’s lipid barrier and retain moisture.
6. Reduces Inflammation and Redness
Goat milk is good for sensitive skin since it has a similar pH level to healthy skin. It also has anti-inflammatory effects and can help to reduce irritation or redness.
7. Effectively Cleanses the Skin
Any oils or natural ingredients which have high levels of both lauric and caprylic acid make excellent cleansers. This is because they can remove dirt and excess oil without affecting the skin’s natural barrier. Goat’s milk is also antifungal and antibacterial and effective of cleansing the skin of pathogens.
Goatmilk soaps are perfect if you need a gentle cleanser or face wash. Since goat milk has anti-inflammatory properties it can cleanse the skin without inflaming allergic reactions.
8. Leaves Skin with a Healthy Glow
Since goat milk contains lactic acid, which is an alpha hydroxy acid, it gently sloughs off dead skin cells leaving the skin looking brighter. At the same time the fatty acids help to plump up and hydrate the skin, leaving an overall dewy glow.
