Eucalyptus Oil for Hair: Uses and Benefits for Growth

Eucalyptus oil is a great natural remedy for hair growth. It helps to stimulate growth and reduce hair loss by increasing blood flow to the scalp, nourishing the hair follicles and reducing inflammation. This post looks at all the benefits and uses of eucalyptus oil for the hair.

Eucalyptus Oil for Hair

Eucalyptus essential oil has been around for thousands of years and has a myriad of benefits. It is used in aromatherapy as well as to reduce the symptoms of colds and relieve muscle and joint pain.

Eucalyptus oil is a popular oil in homemade hair treatments. This is because it contains bioflavonoids and tannin which cause a dilation of the blood vessels in the scalp, allowing more nutrients and oxygen to reach the hair root.

There are also many uses for Eucalyptus Globulus leaf oil in skin care. Chinese, Indian Ayurvedic, Greek, and European medicine have used eucalyptus oil for thousands of years for this very purpose.

This post looks at all the benefits of eucalyptus oil for the hair and how you can use this amazing oil at home.

Benefits of Eucalyptus Oil for the Hair

Nourishes your hair follicles with essential nutrients – Eucalyptus oil increases blood circulation in the scalp which in turn leads to more nutrients and oxygen reaching the hair follicles.

Reduces inflammation in your scalp – Since eucalyptus has anti-inflammatory properties it can calm the skin and reduce the effects of allergic reactions. With regular use it improves overall scalp health.

Stimulates hair growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp – Eucalyptus oil creates the ideal environment for hair growth by reducing scalp inflammation and increasing blood flow to the hair follicles. This in turn leads to greater nourishment and oxygenation of the cells leading to faster, and healthier growth.

Helps to combat dandruff – The anti-fungal and antiseptic properties in eucalyptus makes it an effective treatment for dandruff. The antimicrobial properties can treat a number of scalp infections and calm and itchy scalp.

Treats head lice – A study from 2017 concluded that eucalyptus oil could be used as an alternative treatment for head lice.

Increase hair elasticity – When added to a hair mask eucalyptus can help to improve your overall hair health leaving the hair shafts stronger and more elastic.

Other Essential Oils for Hair Growth

Eucalyptus oil can be combined with other essential oils to add more benefits. The essential oils listed below work well combined with eucalyptus to promote healthy hair and a healthy scalp.

Lavender essential oil – Lavender can speed up hair growth and also has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.

Spearmint essential oil – Both spearmint and peppermint oil increase follicle depth and hair growth.

Rosemary essential oil – Rosemary oil has been proved to work as well as minoxidil to promote hair growth.

Cedarwood essential oil – Cedarwood balances oil producing glands on the scalp and has antifungal and antibacterial properties. It creates the perfect environment for hair to grow.

Thyme essential oil – Thyme prevents hair loss and has been used to treat alopecia. If you suffer from excess hair fall this essential oil would be a good choice to add to your hair treatment.

Clary sage essential oil – Clary sage works in a similar way to lavender, making the hair stronger and grow faster. This is a great addition if your aim is fast growth.

Tea tree essential oil – When used topically tea tree oil unplugs hair follicles and helps to increase hair growth.

Good Carrier Oils for Your Hair Treatment

Most essential oils should be mixed with a carrier oil since they are too potent to be applied directly to the skin. Pure eucalyptus oil is a powerful astringent and could sting, or cause redness or other adverse effects if it is applied directly to the skin.

Before using the oil on the scalp I recommend using one of the following oils to dilute the hair treatment. These oils all have their own hair benefits.

Castor oil – Castor oil is a thick sticky oil which is often used as a natural hair conditioner. It helps to moisturise dry locks and strengthen the hair shaft. This oil is also useful for combatting dandruff since it has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. It can reduce inflammation caused by seborrhoeic dermatitis, which is a common cause of dandruff.

Jojoba oil – Jojoba oil is rich in vitamin C, B vitamins, vitamin E, copper, and zinc. It deeply nourishes the hair and moisturises the scalp. It is a good oil to prevent hair loss and promote hair thickness. Jojoba oil can also help to fight a fungal infection on the scalp.

Argan oil – Argan oil moisturises the hair and scalp and makes the hair shaft thicker and stronger. It is known to make the hair glossy and reduce frizz. With regular use it also leaves the hair thicker and fuller.

Almond oil – Almond oil is rich in vitamin B-7 which is also know as biotin. It helps to keep the hair healthy and strong, and protects it from sun damage, with a natural SPF 5.

How to Use Eucalyptus Oil for Your Hair

Mix 4 to 6 drops of eucalyptus oil with your chosen carrier oil in a 10ml bottle with an eyedropper. Then apply this mixture to your scalp, and massage in a circular motion. You could also add a few drops to your shampoo.

Eucalyptus Oil in Skin Care

Eucalyptus oil is also an excellent ingredient in skin care. Remember to never apply pure essential oil directly to your skin. Always mix it with a carrier oil first.

In order to prepare eucalyptus to be used on the skin you can dilute it with almond, apricot kernel or avocado oil. It can also be mixed with a lotion if a carrier oil is not available.

Eucalyptus oil benefits for the skin include:

  • Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties leave you with blemish-free skin
  • Cleans impurities from the pores, making it an excellent skin cleanser
  • Moisturises the skin leaving it looking healthy and hydrated
  • Acts as an antioxidant and protects the skin from the environment
