Are you looking for the best blue hair dye for dark hair? If you have black hair or brown hair and want to change your hair color to blue, these are the best hair dyes for you!
Blue hair trends started growing in popularity in 2019 and are still super popular today! Celebrities like Lady Gaga, Rihanna Kylie Jenner and Katy Perry have all been seen out in recent years with blue hair.
If you have dark hair there are many different shades of blue hair dye that would work for your natural color. They include different shades of sky blue, midnight blue, teal, and denim.
There are also options available which don’t involve using hydrogen peroxide or other harsh chemicals which could lead to hair damage.
When researching blue hair dyes, I obviously couldn’t test them all out on my hair, but this post is a compilation of all the research I did when looking for blue hair dye for dark hair. I made sure the dye could be used on dark or black hair, and took photographs of what the dye would look like on darker hair colors.
When I dyed my own hair I opted for a temporary blue dye since I had to wash it out before going back to work, however I have included in this post all the options I found including permanent and semi-permanent color. I hope this information is helpful to you in finding the right blue dye for your own hair!

1. L’Oreal Paris Colorista BLUE Black Permanent Hair Dye
Available at: Amazon, Tesco or Boots
Best Blue Black Hair Dye – Permanent
When I was looking at permanent blue dyes, the two that looked the best for dark brown or black hair were the L’Oreal Blue Black Permanent Gel Hair Dye, or the Schwarzkopf Live Intense Colour. Both of these gave a permanent blue tint to dark hair colors.
Unfortunately I couldn’t choose a permanent dye because I had to be able to wash it out before I went back to work, but I would have chosen one of these two if I could!
The L’Oreal option is a permanent blue hair dye which comes in a gel formula for quick application. It leaves dark hair a noticeable blue color, and is a great choice if you’re looking for more than just a subtle tint! I took a photograph of the colour chart so you can see what colour to expect on different shades of dark hair.
- Permanent at-home hair colour formulated with pure dyes, Includes deep conditioning hair mask for...
- Results in 20 minutes, Delivers bold and striking colour lasting up to 8 weeks, Up to 100% grey...
- Read instructions. Patch test 48 hrs before use. 1) Wearing gloves, pour colour gel into developer...

2. Schwarzkopf Live Intense Colour Cosmic Blue 090
Available at: Amazon, Superdrug or Boots
Out of the whole Schwarzkopf range, the Live Intense Colour Cosmic Blue is the best option for dark hair. The image below shows what results you can expect depending on your natural hair colour.
One thing I thought was great about this dye was it includes a vibrancy serum with vitamins and oils, so it doesn’t just give your hair intense colour, but also leaves it shiny and smooth!
I never tested this hair dye myself, however one of my friends did and reported back! She told me that her hair didn’t look as blue as the colour shown on the box. She has black hair and the end result was a very subtle blue tint that could be seen in the light. I would say this isn’t the option for you if you want a bold hair color.
If you are looking for blue black this is a good choice as this dye is basically black with a slight blue tint.
- Long lasting permanent hair dye
- For medium brown to black
- Up to 100 percent grey coverage

3. Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Color Midnight Blue Semi Permanent Hair Dye
Available at: Amazon, Boots or Superdrug
Garnier make both permanent and a semi permanents dyes in the same colour, so make sure you check the box to ensure you’re buying the right one. If you aren’t sure if blue is the right colour for you, the semi-permanent dye might be the best one to choose since it washes out after eight weeks.
The shade of blue your hair will be left will depend on your natural hair color. As with the Schwarzkopf hair dye, the Garnier dye only leaves a tint of blue on black or very dark brown hair. This dye won’t give you a strong vibrant color, but if you’re looking for a subtle blue it’s a good choice.
The photograph below shows the colour you can expect on black to dark brown hair. I’ve seen a lot of people on beauty forums commenting that this dye is more of a black blue than blue.
- Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Color Vibrant Intense Permanent hair dye
- Up to 8 weeks of vibrant and intense colour
- The 5 oils conditioner restores hair to reveal up to 3x shinier hair and up to 3x stronger hair

4. Superdrug Vibrance Permanent Hair Dye Midnight Blue 2.8
Available at: Superdrug
The Colour Performance Vibrance Permanent Hair Dye is made by Superdrug (a health and beauty retailed in the United Kingdom), so this option won’t be available for my international readers. I wanted to include it in this post however as it’s an affordable option for achieving blue black hair if you live in the UK.
Despite being a permanent dye, the colour does start to fade after around six weeks. I thought this dye was a great option however as it contains jojoba oil and pro-vitamin B5 to help protect and condition the hair during the colouring process. It also helps to make the hair more glossy, and the colour more vibrant.
I have included below a photograph of what to expect on dark brown hair.
5. L’Oreal Paris Casting Creme Gloss Semi-Permanent Hair Dye 201 Blue Black
Available at Amazon, Boots or Superdrug
The L’Oreal Paris Casting Creme Gloss Semi-Permanent Hair Dye doesn’t contain any ammonia. Ammonia free formulas tend to be more gentle, make the hair look more natural, and contain no odour.
Watch my video about ammonia free hair dyes
Although this is a semi-permanent dye, it will last for up to twenty eight washes. The formula contains royal jelly, and leaves you with soft and silky hair.
This dye had better reviews online compared with other brands. The only thing I would be concerned about is this option last longer on your hair than most semi-permanent dyes, so if you want something that washes off quickly you’d be better off using the Superdrug dye.
I have included a photograph below to show you what to expect on dark brown, very dark brown and black hair. This is my top pick for dark blue hair color that lasts up to five months.
- Ammonia free semi-permanent hair dye, Ideal for first time at -home hair colour, Complete natural...
- Results in 20 minutes, Delivers refreshing and glossy colour for a natural finish, Lasts up to 28...
- Follow packet instructions, Patch test 48 hours before use, 1.) Use gloves and pour colouring bottle...

Available at Amazon, Walmart or Bonanza
This is a blue hair dye that may be better suited to blonde hair, or hair that has been pre-lightened. When applied to dark hair however it does leave a very slight dark blue tinge. 7. Adore Shining Semi Permanent Hair Colour 178 Royal Navy
Available at Amazon, FeelUnique or Walmart
The Adore Semi-Permanent hair colour is a really popular option that’s free from ingredients such as peroxide, ammonia and alcohol which could dry the hair out. I’ve actually seen this product used on dark hair and it does do a good job of colouring it blue! Be aware it might make your hair look a bit darker than expected. A friend who has brown hair used this product and her hair looked blue black afterwards.
After doing my research, I would recommend either royal navy or indigo blue for dark hair. I have included a photograph of these colours below. My friend used the royal navy colour.
Adore make semi-permanent blue hair dye in a wide range of shades. If you want to try out a brighter shade, I’ve included a photograph below of some of their lighter colours. Be aware though that these might show up better on light hair.

On the box it says this product is for pre-lightened or bleached hair however it still creates a faint blue sheen on dark hair. This formula is also designed not to damage the hair, and contains Argan oil and shea butter to add gloss and shine.
It depends on how dark your hair is but if you are looking for something that’s very subtle on dark hair, I think this would be a good choice. It also lasts for up to fifteen washes.
- Clairol Colour Gloss Up is a salon-inspired formula to keep your colour fresh for longer.
