CeraVe has become one of my favourite skincare brands for helping to reduce dry skin. This post is my full review of the Cerave Eye Repair Cream which includes an analysis of the ingredients, and a comparison with other popular eye creams.
I’m aware there’s a debate in the beauty world about whether you need an eye cream at all, or if a good moisturiser is enough. In my view there are two reasons why it’s important to use both an eye cream and a moisturiser.
Firstly, the skin around the eyes is ten times thinner than the skin on the rest of your face. Secondly, the first signs of ageing tend to appear around the eyes. It’s therefore important to choose an eye cream that’s specifically designed to protect the skin on this delicate part of the face.
If you have dry or dehydrated skin, like I do, CeraVe or Cetaphil both produce excellent skincare products to add moisturise and reduce irritation. In this post I have reviewed the CeraVe Eye repair cream, including what I liked about the product and what I didn’t like.
I’ve also analysed the ingredients and compared it to other popular products such as the Cetaphil Hydrating Eye Gel-Cream, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Eye Awakening Gel Cream, The Ordinary Caffeine Solution and The Inkey List Caffeine Eye Cream.

CeraVe Eye Repair Cream Review

What Does the CeraVe Eye Repair Cream Do?
Since I don’t have dark circles or puffiness, my main reason for choosing this eye cream was to protect the skin around my eyes. I choose this product since it contains ingredients that will protect my skin from free radicals and sun damage.
Unfortunately, the CeraVe Eye Repair Cream does not contain a sunscreen, but it does contain ingredients that help to moisturise and hydrate the skin, and protect it from the environment. According to the bottle, the cream is also designed to reduce puffiness and dark circles, and brighten the skin around the eye area.
Looking at the ingredients, I can see the cream contains three essential ceramides (ceramide np, ceramide ap and ceramide eop), which all work together to restore and strengthen the skin’s protective barrier. This is something that anyone of any age can benefit from.
Another ingredient in this eye cream is hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate). This is one of my favourite ingredients in skincare products since it helps to hydrate and plump up the skin. If you have fine lines that are caused by dehydration, hyaluronic acid can be a great remedy!
The third key ingredient in this eye cream is niacinamide. Niacinamide has multiple benefits including reducing the look of dark circles and inflammation, and protecting the skin from sun damage or oxidative stress.
Let’s have a look at the benefits of niacinamide in a little more detail.
Benefits of Niacinamide in Eye Creams
I was excited to see Niacinamide (also known as Vitamin B3) high up in the ingredient list for this product. Niacinamide not only helps to reduce the appearance of dark circles, but also protects the skin from the environment.
Niacinamide also keeps the skin firm, healthy and elastic. One study from 2004 showed that applying Niacinamide to the skin led to increased keratin levels. Keratin is a protein that keeps the skin strong, thick and free from wrinkles.
The same study showed that niacinamide helps to strengthen the skin’s lipid barrier and retain moisture. This means it helps to keep the skin supple and smooth, and seals in extra hydration.
Another benefit of niacinamide, and one of the main reasons it’s found in many eye creams, is its ability to reduce dark marks. Clinical studies have shown that niacinamide can help to decrease skin pigmentation, and make the skin appear lighter and more even. This can be useful in reducing dark circles under the eyes.
How to Use the CeraVe Eye Repair Cream
Apply the CeraVe Eye Repair Cream in small dots around the eye area, as shown in the photograph below. Using your ring finger gently smooth the product into the skin until it is completely absorbed. I found that the cream was not at all greasy, and absorbed well into the skin. Apply the cream once or twice a day in the morning and evening.
The photograph below shows what the cream looks like when it comes out of the tube. It has a thick gel-like consistency, and makes the skin look brighter and more hydrated almost straight away.
Pros and Cons of the CeraVe Eye Repair Cream
Although I enjoyed using this product, I prefer eye creams that are a bit thicker and richer in consistency. In my opinion however this is one of the best affordable eye creams available. It’s suitable for all skin types and won’t irritate sensitive skin. It’s also a fragrance-free eye cream which has been allergy tested and has the National Eczema Association seal of acceptance.
I can’t comment on how well this product reduces dark circles and eye puffiness since I was using it mainly for protective reasons, and to reduce fine lines. My overall verdict is below.

- Plumped up the skin and reduced the appearance of fine lines
- Absorbed easily
- Didn’t feel greasy
- Great price
- Non comedogenic and suitable for oily skin
Cons
- I prefer eye creams to be thicker
- It was hard to get the remaining product out of the tube when it was nearly empty
CeraVe Eye Repair Cream Ingredients
The key ingredients in this product are ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. You can see from the full ingredients list below that niacinamide is listed second in the ingredients list meaning it’s one of the main ingredients in the product.
The CeraVe Repair Eye Cream also contains aloe vera (aloe barbadensis leaf extract) which can help to treat dry skin and inflammation. Aloe is known to be gentle on delicate skin, and is often used in skincare products to soothe redness and promote healthy skin.
This cream also contains a marine and botanical complex to make the area around the eyes look brighter and more awake.

What Sets the CeraVe Eye Cream Apart From its Competitors?
You don’t need to buy expensive eye creams to brighten the skin around the eye area. There are several good, and affordable products available that effectively target eye circles, puffiness and lines.
When researching the CeraVe Eye Repair cream, I found five other good creams that I would say were its main competitors. These included:

- The Inkey List Caffeine Eye Cream
- La Roche-Posay Hydraphase Intense Eye Cream

Overall if your main concern is dark circles, I would choose either the CeraVe or Cetaphil eye creams. Both products contain niacinamide, and the Cetaphil cream also contains licorice root which helps to reduce hyperpigmentation.
If puffiness is your main concern, choose one of the eye creams which contain caffeine: The Ordinary Caffeine Solution or The Inkey List Caffeine Eye Cream. Caffeine narrows the blood vessels and calms the skin. It is an effective anti-inflammatory ingredient which can reduce redness and under eye bags.
Out of the five eye creams that I compared I would say that the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Eye Awakening Gel Cream is the best for younger skin. It helps to revive tired eyes and make the skin look plumper and more hydrated. I love the whole Hydro Boost range and would recommend it for anyone in their early 20s, or if you have particularly dehydrated skin.
