Did you know that coconut oil spray can help strengthen your hair roots? Regularly applying coconut oil to the scalp helps to nourish the hair follicles and promote hair growth. In this post I will show you how to make your own DIY coconut oil spray for hair with essential oils.
Coconut oil is one of the best oils to reduce protein loss and improve the condition of the hair. You can apply it to the hair before washing to protect it from loosing it’s natural moisture, or onto dry hair to make it softer, shinier and easier to style.
Regularly using coconut oil on your hair will improve the hair’s lustre and shine and help it to grow faster. It’s also used for lice prevention and to prevent hair loss, UV damage and dandruff.
In this post I will show you how you can create a daily coconut oil spray using essential oils to promote hair growth, repair damage and help you growth healthier hair.

Ingredients for the Coconut Oil Hair Spray
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon sunflower oil
- 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel
- 3 drops lavender essential oil
- 3 drops spearmint essential oil
- 2 cups distilled water
Let’s have a look at these ingredients in some more detail and the reasons why I have chosen to add them to the coconut oil hair spray…
1. Organic Coconut Oil
The first ingredient you need is pure coconut oil. When making a hair spray it’s important that you buy fractionated coconut oil rather than regular extra virgin coconut oil. Fractionated coconut oil goes through a process of hydrolysis and steam distillation which removes almost all of the long chain triglycerides and lauric acid. It becomes a saturated oil with only medium-chain fatty acids.
The benefit of fractionated coconut oil over a regular jar of coconut oil is that it is able to remain in liquid form whilst in the fridge. This is because the lauric acid in coconut oil, which causes the oil to solidify, has been removed.
Coconut oil is rich in vitamin E and when applied to the hair shaft it helps to add moisture and calm frizzy hair. Unlike other oils, coconut helps to retain hair proteins. A little goes a long way so you only need a small amount of this oil for hair treatments.
Directions: Add two tablespoons of coconut oil to the spray bottle.

- Popular in skincare and beauty products, it islightweight and easily absorbed by your skin; perfect...

2. Sunflower Oil
Sunflower has a greater amount of oleic acid than coconut oil which helps to seal moisture into the hair strands and make the hair softer and more manageable. It works as a great combination with coconut oil to ensure the hair is fully moisturised and bouncy.
It is also an oil that works well on all hair types and helps to make fine hair thicker. Regularly coating the hair with sunflower oil will help to smooth the hair cuticle and help the hair retain its natural oils.
Directions: Add one teaspoon of sunflower oil to the spray bottle.
- 100% pure Sunflower Oil, certified organic by the Soil Association
- High in the polyunsaturated fatty acid Linoleic acid (Omega 6) and naturally rich in vitamin E.
- Easily absorbed by the skin, our lightweight Organic Sunflower Oil is soothing and protecting, helps...

3. Aloe Vera Gel
Applying aloe vera to your hair and scalp helps to repair and moisturise dry and damaged hair. It is one of the natural ingredients I regularly add to my DIY hair masks and beauty products since it contains healthy nutrients like vitamins a, c and e which promote healthy hair growth. It also contains vitamin B12 and folic acid which can prevent hair from falling out.
Aloe is a great natural ingredient if you have brittle hair. It also helps to moisturise a dry scalp and define curls in coily or curly hair types.
Directions: Add one teaspoon of aloe vera gel to the spray bottle.

Lavender essential oil should never be applied to the scalp alone but can be mixed with other carrier oils (like fractionated coconut oil) and massaged into the hair and scalp to improves circulation, stimulate hair growth and reduce hair fall.

How to Use the Coconut Spray for Hair
Once you have added all the ingredient to your spray bottle along with two cups of distilled water make sure you shake the bottle well to ensure the natural ingredients are thoroughly mixed. It is normal for the oils to separate so you will need to shake the bottle every time you want to use your hair spray.
Spritz the coconut oil spray onto either dry or damp hair and use a wide tooth comb to distribute it evenly throughout the hair. Make sure you have also sprayed the scalp near to the hair roots as the oils will help to stimulate hair growth and moisturise the skin.
You can use the spray as a pre poo treatment or as a spritz if you notice your hair has become dry or frizzy. Once you have made your coconut oil spray you can keep it in the fridge for up to one week.
