This is my review of Champneys Revitalising Face Mask and eight other sheet masks.
Sheet masks originally came from South Korea and Japan, their purpose being to hydrate the skin. The cloth mask holds serum on your skin for 10 to 20 minutes, allowing it to absorb. You can use sheet masks every day but it is recommended that you use them at least 3 times a week.

Experience
I bought this mask from Boots and it came in a box of three masks. The masks contains extracts from the rooibos plant. The first thing I thought when I took it out of it’s packet is that it smells like a men’s aftershave, which I didn’t like at all. I found the mask was far to big for my face. It has hooks to put behind your ears to keep the mask on your face, and hooks to keep it in place under your chin. I found that the mask was much wetter than other sheet masks I’ve used and for this reason I felt it was really uncomfortable on my face.
When I took it off after 20 minutes it left my face really sticky. In fact my face was still sticky from the serum the following morning and I found I couldn’t wait to wash it off my face. The first time I used it I did notice my skin appeared more hydrated in the days after, but the second time I think it clogged the pores of my skin and caused a small breakout.
I think this mask is good if you have very dry skin and you don’t mind that it’s dripping wet! I doubt I will be buying it again as I think there are better ones on the market.
Pros:
- Very hydrating
- Doesn’t fall off your face due to hooks
- Affordable and easily available in Boots
Cons:
- Far too wet and sticky
- Smells like men’s aftershave
2. Super Hydra Aqua Capsule Mask by NEOGEN
I left this on for an hour before it fully absorbed. It did feel nice on my face unlike the Champneys one and it did leave my skin with a glow afterwards. It was slightly sticky after I removed it but not as sticky as the Champneys one. At the moment this is my favourite. This one made more of a difference to the quality of my skin than any of the others.
3. CHOBS collagen mask
This one didn’t fit my face as well as the neogen one. It felt nice on my skin but was not as hydrating as the neogen one. There was no sticky trace whatsoever left on my face. I don’t think this contains hyaurlonic acid and I don’t feel it really hydrated my skin as well as the neogen one.
4. Belleza Castillo Edge Cutimal Duck Soothing Mask
This mask is fun in that it has a picture of a duck on it. It was one of the least expensive masks. I thought it smelt of soap and I wasn’t impressed that it had parabens in it. I took it off after 15 minutes. It was quite sticky and I didn’t see much difference in my skin. I have also bought the Panda one but after I use that one I doubt I’ll be buying any more of these.
5. NIP + FAB HYDRATE Dragon’s Blood Fix Hydration Mask
When I first put this on I found it very difficult to take the gauze off and at one point had to take the mask off completely. Once I managed to take the gauze off the mask felt like a second skin on my face. It felt very comfortable. After 20 minutes I could feel it was drying so I took it off (the instructions advise 10-20mins anyway). It did leave a slightly sticky feel on my skin but it wasn’t too sticky. Less sticky that Champney and Neogen. My skin definitely felt silky and it looked more hydrated afterwards. This is one of my favourites and I would definitely buy it again.
Ingredients in Sheet Masks
Before reviewing the masks that I have tried I first had a look at the ingredients they include.
Nearly all sheet masks contain hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and/or antioxidants. The ingredients which keep moisture in the skin include: Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin, propylene glycol, glycolic acid, sodium hyaluronate, sorbitol. I have listed below some of the ingredients you might see listed and what they do for the skin:
Hyalurinoc Acid
(also know as sodium hyaluronate)
This should be in all masks. Hyaluronic acid is very hydrating as it holds 1000 times it’s weight in water.
Glycerin
(also known as glycerine and glycerol)
This keeps moisture in the skin.
Allantoin
This is a skin conditioning agent. It stimulates skin cell regeneration, increases water content of skin and increases the shedding of upper layers of dead skin which increases skin smoothness
Beta-Glucan
This protects against irritants and environmental stressors. It has a barrier-boosting function. It locks in moisture. Tests have shown beta-glucan is 20% more hydrating than hyaluronic acid at the same concentration. It’s a collagen booster.
Ceramides
This protects against environmental aggressors like irritants, and pollution. It also helps the skin retain moisture.
Arginine
This is an amino acid which stabilises the skin’s pH value. It also helps to improve the skin’s ability to retain moisture.
Betaine
This has a conditioning effect on the skin, and helps to reduce irritations and to protect the skin from dehydration. It is skin-calming and hydrating.
