Natural Oils that Add Volume to Fine Hair
There are many natural oils that can be used to add volume to thin or fine locks if applied correctly! If you are wanting to make a natural hair styling product it’s best to use lightweight oils that won’t coat the strands and weigh them down. Light oils include sweet almond oil, Argan oil, and grapeseed oil. If you have low porosity hair it’s a good idea to always use lighter oils.
Heavier oils such as olive oil, castor oil, coconut oil, are great choices for hair masks since they help to condition the hair and add volume. They also help to nourish the hair follicles, promoting growth and thicker hair. Rosemary essential oil and pumpkin seed oil are also useful for adding volume to fine hair.
Olive Oil
You can use olive oil on its own as a hair treatment to promote thicker hair. In fact my DIY olive oil hair mask is one of my go-to treatments when my hair needs an extra boost.
Olive oil is full of healthy nutrients including vitamin E and omega 3 fatty acids which protect the hair from damage, moisturise it, and encourage fuller locks. Olive oil also helps to seal moisture into the strands, helping your hair to retain its shine and reducing frizz.
When I use olive oil as a natural hair thickening treatment, I combine with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice to give the hair extra shine. Massage the oil into the scalp and and hair and leave it for at least an hour before washing off with a clarifying shampoo.

Other Natural Ingredients to Thicken Fine Hair
Eggs
Eggs are a well known for improving hair health. They are rich in biotin, folate and vitamins A and E which all help to keep the hair healthy and thick. The yolk of the egg is rich in fats which moisturise the hair and scalp, and the egg white contains proteins which help to strengthen the hair shaft and reduce breakage
Eggs are a great natural thickener for the hair, and can work especially well at making fine, limp hair appear thicker. If you use eggs in your hair treatments then I would recommend that you apply the mixture to wet hair that has been shampooed beforehand. Then just cover with a shower cap before rinsing out after 20 minutes.
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera has been used for centuries in health and beauty treatments, and as a natural hair thickener for fine hair. The plant is a well known natural remedy that can help to stimulate hair growth, strengthen the hair shaft and reduce breakage.
Aloe vera gel contains vitamins A, C and E, vitamin B12, folic acid, choline and multiple enzymes, minerals and fatty acids which nourish the hair follicle and promote thick hair. (source)
Aloe vera gel can be used as a natural thickener for fine hair by applying the aloe vera gel onto scalp after shampooing. Let it sit for 3-5 minutes before rinsing off.
Avocado
Avocado is a nutrient-dense fruit that contains monounsaturated fat which has been linked with healthier and shinier hair. Avocados are also full of beneficial nutrients such as potassium, iron, zinc and vitamins A, B6 and E which all contribute to growing thicker hair.
You can use pureed avocado in your hair treatments, or avocado oil. The oil may help to moisturise the hair and make it shinier, but I prefer to use mashed avocado. This is because I’ve found it leaves less residue on the strands and is easier to wash out.
Be sure to use an organic avocado that has creamy flesh. I normally use mashed avocado with olive oil and massage it into my scalp and hair before leaving it for an hour.
Onion Juice
Onion juice is another natural remedy that can stimulate hair growth and thicken the hair. Onions contain sulfur which helps to improve blood flow in the scalp and stimulate hair growth. It is also thought to prevent premature greying and dandruff.
Sulfur is found in amino acids such as keratin. Keratin is protein that is required for growing strong hair. When onion juice is applied to the hair and scalp it can provide extra sulfur which can help with the growth of longer, thicker hair.
Onion juice is also believed to promote blood circulation in the scalp and increase collagen production. Some studies have shown that it may even be beneficial in preventing hair loss, and a natural treatment for alopecia.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a popular remedy that can be used to reduce hair loss and increase hair growth. It contains rich amounts of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients which nourish the hair follicles, improve blood circulation in the scalp and fight the bacteria which can cause dandruff.
A simple remedy for thinning hair is to mix apple cider vinegar with water into a 50/50 mix. Rinse the mixture through your hair after shampooing or wetting, before rinsing it off thoroughly.
Indian Gooseberry (Amla)
Indian Gooseberry (also known as Alma) has been used since ancient times in Indian Ayurvedic medicine to promote healthier hair. The plant is rich in vitamin C which can help to reduce hair fall and encourage new hair growth.
Indian gooseberry juice mixed with lemon juice makes a great natural thickener for thinning hair. Apply the mixture to wet hair, leave it in overnight if possible then rinse out thoroughly in the morning.
