I’ve recently finished reading the amazing book “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. Since then I’ve been compiling a list of habits that I want to try and incorporate into my every day life, by researching the daily habits of successful people.
I thought I would share my list with my readers in the hopes that it might inspire some of you to make positive changes in your own lives.
1. Wake up Early
I’ve discovered that a common habit of successful people is that they wake up early! I think this is a great habit to get used to because it gives you a head start on the day and allows you time to get things done before the rest of the world wakes up.
In another post I wrote a list of morning habits to help you get ready for the day. I think waking up early can allow you to begin your day with peace and quiet, as the morning can be a time of reflection and renewal.
Additionally, early risers are often able to take advantage of the hours before work to get things done, such as exercise, meditation, or reading.
2. Eat Healthy Food
Another important habit for success is eating healthy food. I think this is so important because what we put into our bodies has a direct impact on how we feel and function throughout the day. If we eat junk food, we are more likely to feel sluggish and low on energy. However, if we eat healthy foods, we are more likely to feel alert and have the energy we need to be productive.
There are a few simple changes you can make to your diet that will have a big impact on your health. First, try to eat more fruits and vegetables. Second, cut back on processed foods and sugar. And third, make sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day. These simple changes can make a big difference to how you feel and function each day.
For me, the first step was to stop ordering take away food every other night and start cooking every day. I’ve managed to keep this habit up and learnt some new recipes at the same time.
3. Keep a Journal
Another habit that successful people often have is keeping a journal. I think this is a great habit because it allows you to track your progress and reflect on your day-to-day experiences. Additionally, journaling can be a great way to release stress and clear your mind.
There are many different ways to keep a journal, so find one that works best for you. You can write in a traditional notebook, or you can use an online journaling tool like Evernote, 750words, Ohlife, Penzu or Oneword. The important thing is to find a system that you will actually use on a regular basis.
I’ve been keeping a journal every day to track my habits. If you have an iPad and Apple Pencil, there are also journaling apps you can use. Day One Journal is a great one!
4. Set Goals Each Day
Another important habit for success is setting goals for the day. I make sure I have daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals, and regularly check on my progress.
Every morning I write down my goals for the day. I think this is important because it gives me something to strive for and helps me to stay motivated.
I also think it’s important to see the bigger picture in your life, and regularly look at your monthly and yearly goals. When you have a goal, it gives you a sense of purpose and direction. Additionally, setting goals can help you to stay organized and on track.
There are a few things you should keep in mind when setting goals. First, make sure your goals are specific and measurable. Second, set a deadline for each goal. And third, make sure your goals are realistic and achievable.
Since I have an online business, I set goals for how many videos and articles I want to produce every month. I then schedule these out and decide what I’m doing each day to make sure I hit my goals.
5. Do One Thing Every Day to Move Closer to Your Goals
After reading Atomic Habits I became aware at how important it was to do little things each day to keep moving towards your goals. When you know what your larger goal is, you can take small steps each day to take you towards it.
Depending on what your goals are, there are many things you could do such as read books or articles related to your goal, listen to podcasts, or take courses. You can also take action steps like writing a business plan or creating a marketing campaign.
The important thing is to just take one small step each day. When you do this over time, it will add up and you will make significant progress towards your goals.
6. Read
Another habit that successful people often have is reading. I think reading is so important because it helps to expand your knowledge and understanding of the world. Additionally, reading can help you to relax and escape from the stresses of everyday life.
There are many different types of books you can read, so find ones that interest you. If you’re not sure what to read, start with a few classic novels or biographies of successful people. Alternatively, you could read books about history, science, philosophy or any other topic that you find interesting.
I try to read for at least 30 minutes every day, and I keep a list of books I want to read so I always have something to look forward to. If you need some motivation to start reading, I’m currently compiling a list of recommended books that I’ll be publishing on my website soon!
7. Listen to Motivational Podcasts
I love listening to motivational podcasts because they help me to stay inspired and motivated. There are many great podcasts out there, so find ones that resonate with you. I often listen to podcasts while I’m working or commuting, and I usually have a few episodes downloaded so I can listen even when I don’t have an internet connection.
Some of my favorite motivational podcasts include The Tony Robbins Podcast, How I Built This, The Skinny Confidential, My First Million, the Mindset Mentor and Daily Boost.
8. Say Affirmations
Saying affirmations is another habit that can help you to be successful. Affirmations are positive statements that you repeat to yourself, and they can help to change your mindset and beliefs. When you say affirmations, you are essentially training your brain to think in a more positive and productive way.
I like to say affirmations every morning when I wake up, and I also write them down in my journal. Some of my favorite affirmations include “I am worthy of success,” “I am capable of achieving anything I set my mind to,” and “I am surrounded by love and abundance.”
9. Clear Clutter
Make it a daily habit to throw away things when you’ve finished with them. This will help you to avoid accumulating things that you don’t need.
If you have already accumulated too much, you could set aside 30minutes every day to clear out any clutter that has built up in cupboards or drawers.
It feels great to declutter your home and it will make it easier to keep on top of things in the future. Plus, it’s really satisfying to be able to open a cupboard or drawer and know exactly what is in there!
10. Meditate
Many successful people meditate regularly. Meditation can help to reduce stress, increase focus, and improve overall well-being.
If you’re new to meditation, there are many great resources available to help you get started. I like to use the Headspace app, but there are also plenty of free guided meditations available on YouTube.
I typically meditate for 10-20 minutes each day, and I find it really helps me to feel more calm and centered.
11. Write a List of Things you are Grateful for
Successful people know that gratitude is important. That’s why many of them make it a habit to write down a list of things they are grateful for each day.
Taking the time to reflect on the things you are grateful for can help to boost your mood and increase your sense of well-being.
I like to write my list of things I’m grateful for in my journal, but you could also keep a gratitude jar or box. Every time something good happens, write it down and put it in the jar. Then, when you’re feeling low, you can read through your list and remember all of the great things that have happened in your life.
