Natural Ingredients that Help to Combat Acne

There are many natural ingredients that can help combat acne! I regularly use the following in my DIY face masks since they are so effective at reducing inflammation, exfoliating the skin and clearing the pores.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is rich in citric acid which helps to eliminate dead skin cells from your pores and prevent clogging. As we know, one of the biggest culprits behind acne breakouts is dirt and oil trapped inside your pores. Citric acid works well as a natural toner and can help to rejuvenate the skin and improve skin tone.

Raw Honey

Honey garners magical properties because of its antibacterial and antiseptic capacity, but there’s more! Honey also contains glycerin which is a natural moisturizer that keeps your skin soft and smooth whilst helping to remove dead skin cells from your pores. Adding a tablespoon of honey to your homemade skin care can both reduce acne and moisturize dry skin.

Clay

Clay is another great ingredient to use because it is an absorbent. It draws out impurities from your skin without drying it out. It also helps to tighten up your pores and leave your skin feeling fresh! If you have particularly oily skin then clay is an ingredient you should definitely incorporate into your homemade face masks!

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera gel is one of the best home remedies for acne because it contains anti-inflammatory properties that will soothe inflamed acne. This ingredient can be used straight from the plant, but it is just as effective when purchased in a store-bought gel form. Aloe is rich in vitamin C, vitamin E and salicylic acid which work to exfoliate and nourish the skin.

Coffee

Applying coffee to the skin can help acne prone skin types due to its detoxifying properties. It helps the skin by drawing out toxins, oils and dirt! It’s also an excellent exfoliant! Coffee is often used in facial masks due to its antioxidant properties. It helps to fight the damaging effects of free radicals.

Cinnamon Powder

In addition to smelling amazing, cinnamon contains antibacterial properties that help to treat acne and keep your face clean of blackheads. Cinnamon also works as a natural antiseptic so it can help prevent excess build-up of bacteria on your face. Cinnamon is one of my favourite ingredients in DIY face mask recipes, and can even be used as a targeted spot treatment.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is another great ingredient to use for your homemade face mask because it provides antibacterial and antiseptic properties that will help prevent acne. It also balances out the pH of your skin! Apple cider vinegar is often found in natural face masks since it works well on different skin types.

Potato

If you have oily, acne-prone skin, potato can be a wonderful natural remedy. Because potatoes are so absorbent, they will draw out impurities and excess oils from your skin like a vacuum! Your pores won’t hold onto anything they don’t need, so keep it clean!
