Are you looking for a list of makeup products for beginners? These fantastic items are brilliant if you want to create a basic makeup kit!
The Estee Lauder Doublewear Foundation is an excellent foundation for a basic makeup kit.
Choosing the Right Colour
I was pretty excited to try out the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation as I had read so many amazing reviews online about it. I chose colour 23C (Fresco).
This stuff claims to stay in place and I can confirm that it certainly does! In fact I had trouble getting it off! I had to buy a new cleanser to get the stuff completely off my face! I think Sali Hughes (I love this author) said in one of her books that this foundation would survive a nuclear holocaust! It’s pretty amazing and gives great coverage and it absolutely won’t budge once you apply it. The only thing is, I’ve been taking such good care of my skin recently that I’m not sure I need too much foundation. I’ve therefore started to use it more as a concealer than foundation. If you want to wear less foundation then check out my post on How to Stop Wearing Foundation.
There’s no pump!
When I first took the lid off in the store I was a bit miffed to see that it doesn’t have a pump! If I’m spending £33.50 on a foundation I’d like a pump! Not having a pump also means I end up pouring out a little bit too much onto my hand. I have solved this problem by shaking the bottle so a small amount ends up in the cap and then I dab it onto my skin.
The Body Shop Foundation
Up until now I’d only ever used The Body Shop Fresh Nude Foundation (Colour Bora Bora Tiare 012) which is also excellent and a better option if you are looking for something more affordable. This was one of the first foundations I tried and should be included in any list of makeup products for beginners.
Estee Lauder v The Body Shop Foundation
In comparison The Body Shop one is much lighter. It doesn’t cover as well but it also doesn’t feel so heavy on the skin. At the moment I will carry on using the Estee Lauder one but I will always have a bottle of The Body Shop one on my shelf. In comparison The Body Shop one is also only £16 for 30ml. It also has a pump!
The Nars Blush Sex Appeal is one of the most popular blushers ever made and should be included in any list of makeup products for beginners!
This is the best blusher I have ever owned (and also probably the most expensive). I chose the colour Sex Appeal because I noticed nearly all the NARS blushers were shimmery or sparkly and I wanted something which had absolutely no glittery powder in it at all. The only two are Sex Appeal and Zen. I never saw Zen listed on the website so I went for Sex Appeal and was pretty pleased with the colour. I ordered mine from Cult Beauty and it arrived quickly
3. EYE MAKEUP
The Boots No 7 Eyeshadow and Pencil are brilliant for a basic makeup kit. Since I have used the Boots No 7 products for so long, I definitely wanted to include them in my list of makeup products for beginners.
No 7 Stay Perfect Amazing Eyes Pencil (colours black and brown)
Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara (colour 01 Extreme Black)
I became interested in trying out the No 7 make up range after trying their Perfect and Protect Serum. I bought one black pencil for my upper eye lid and one brown pencil for under my eyes. It is very easy to draw an even line with this product and the eyeliner does seem to stay put (although I have yet to find an eyeliner which completely stays put!). I have to say though I have a feeling these pencils will only last me for a couple of weeks and then I’ll have to replace them (or maybe not even that long if you are using them every day!). I liked the eye shadow colour. I’m not sure I’d be rushing out to buy it again but it’s definitely nice for every day wear.
Other Eye Products You May Include in a Basic Makeup Kit
Next month I want to try either the HUDA Beauty or Anastasia Beverly Hills palettes to see how they compare to the No 7 range. The Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara actually came in a free sample bag when I bought my foundation. It does what a mascara should do and there are no clumps, so I’m happy.
The Clinique Almost Lipstick contains colours that suit any skin tone and is excellent for a basic makeup kit.
Clinique Almost Lipstick (colour 06 black honey)
This lipstick first came out in 1989. It was actually one of Clinique’s original shades of 1971 but they transformed it into a sheer gloss and it became one of the best selling lipsticks of the 90s (the decade I was a teenager!) Today Black Honey is still Clinique’s top selling colour! When you open it it appears almost black but when applied it comes out a berry colour. It is not a densely pigmented lipstick, instead it deepens your natural lip colour by a couple of shades of berry! I personally feel that every girl should have Clinique black honey in their make up bag because it is one of the most universally flattering colours that’s ever been made.
Perhaps it’s due to nostalgia that I hold onto the lip stick of my teenage years, but I think teenage girls know a good thing when they see it, and I picked up this colour before it ever became a cult beauty favourite. Today make up trends have moved on but Black Honey still remains one of the most popular lipstick colours ever sold.
